Why Ichiro Rocks and Sisler Sucks! Okay. Don’t laugh. This is my serious attempt to fit in and write a sport’s thread thingy. I like to say that I think the Japanese hitter Ichiro is much, much, much better than that old hack George Sisler (I looked this up!) who use to hold the record for most hits in a season. See, the way I see it, they had really tiny gloves back in the stone age when the Sisler guy played (or Gorgeous George as he was called –though really, some ego he had, he is no Carlos Beltran), and the gloves let a lot of hits go by. So when Sisler got 257 hits (I looked that up too!), it was probably more like 200 or maybe like 220. But when Ichiro broke the record, he played against guys with big gloves (I was going to say something not nice –but I didn’t), so he really got more legit hits. So Ichiro should be put into the Hall of Fame and the Sisler guy should be thrown out! There. That’s what I think!

Re: Why Ichiro Rocks and Sisler Sucks! I am sure there is a site someone has that compares apples to apples by having a weight scale for the different eras... While pitching may be watered down now...I would think the small parks as well as the rise of the specialty pitchers would make it a bit harder to get a hit now as well... ...and once upon a time, before Sisler's era, I think walks counted as hits as well...not sure of the decade but it can be looked up. Sisler though was a consistent hitter...and two time .400 hitter...hardly worthy of the word "suck"... Though the notion of a limited Hall of Fame in which you can knock out one guy to put another one in, is appealing...

Re: Why Ichiro Rocks and Sisler Sucks! Oh! Ooops. Okay, like I don't know about the whole pitching thing. I got to go look that up somewhere (LOL). And I used the word "Sucks" because it went with "Rocks." I am sure that Mr. Sisler did not suck in a baseball sense, sorry. Still, how could they catch a ball in that tiny glove? You know? Have either of you played with a small glove? Then how do you know that is not why George got so many hits? Huh? (Pink is a cool color!)

Sisler was inducted in the Hall before Ichiro came to America. You cannot remove people from the Hall of Fame just because his records were broken. In that case, Barry Bonds would be in and Roger Maris would be kicked out. However, that was a poor analogy since Roger Maris was never voted into the Hall of Fame. But, you should understand my concepts. |

Re: Why Ichiro Rocks and Sisler Sucks! In Sisler's day, the ball was not as "juiced" as it is now and a ball was used over and over again until it was fouled into the stands or no longer any good.

Re: Why Ichiro Rocks and Sisler Sucks! Wouldn't an icky ball be harder to catch? Maybe the small gloves and icky ball were the reasons he got so many hits? Maybe no?
