Re: Why Ichiro Rocks and Sisler Sucks!

Another factor, they played against different pitchers whom had different pitches.

Well, Sisler never face Ryan and Johnson...but back then, they threw at you and meant it...and you had no batting helmet...just a cap...so if you dug in at the plate...you better be prepared.

I believe the size issue that ultimately must be addressed is the hits/games ratio. I can't recall the number of games played back then but the 120 figure jumps out at me. 257 hits versus 120 games and 262 versus 162 games ??? Percentage wise I'll go with Sisler.

What was the number of games in the 20's ??

So, you are saying that they were more cautious at the plate?

You are right they didn't have pitchers like that but at the same time they were not as physically fit as players today are either.

Doesn't matter...cause they did not face today's players...as long as they were as fit as the next guy...

But you bring up an interesting point...Ichiro does stretching etc and workouts beyond what today's players do...maybe he holds his peak better than today's players.

Maybe my point isn't clear. Even though both defense and offense are better today I believe that ratio wise Sisler's hits per game average was higher than Ichiro's. Again, that is dependent on the number of games played back then. Also with the "enhancing" that goes on today it is hard to have complete faith that records today are real..... or as real as they were back in the day.

Re: Why Ichiro Rocks and Sisler Sucks!

I guess I am way off. I just looked it up and in 1924 they played 152 games. So it figures out to 1.69 hits per game for Sisler and 1.61 for Ichiro

I would say Ichiro is clean...and ratio wise, since Ichiro I believe broke the record in less than 156, I think he still comes out ahead... at the 156 game mark (ratio wise)

Re: Why Ichiro Rocks and Sisler Sucks!

That season of George Sisler's was absolutely insane. He hit .407! Two years later he hit .420!

But, I think it's completely unfair to compare players from the 1920s to today's players. The athletes today are so much better. The pool of athletes now is world wide where in the 1920s it was pretty much just white guys from the United States. Not that white guys from the United States aren't good, but when you limit the pool to ONLY that, then you don't get the best players.

The pitchers today are better. The fielders are better. The gloves are better. No way would Sisler have hit .420 in today's game. What Ichiro has done so far is amazing. Why can't both be stellar? I say they are.

I like to say that I think the Japanese hitter Ichiro is much, much, much better than that old hack George Sisler (I looked this up!) who use to hold the record for most hits in a season.

See, the way I see it, they had really tiny gloves back in the stone age when the Sisler guy played (or Gorgeous George as he was called –though really, some ego he had, he is no Carlos Beltran), and the gloves let a lot of hits go by. So when Sisler got 257 hits (I looked that up too!), it was probably more like 200 or maybe like 220. But when Ichiro broke the record, he played against guys with big gloves (I was going to say something not nice –but I didn’t), so he really got more legit hits.

So Ichiro should be put into the Hall of Fame and the Sisler guy should be thrown out!

There. That’s what I think!
Wow! you say this by gloves? Remember this, in a era of legendary pitching what the National League gives, and if you mix in the fact the game wasn't as highly advanced in the game with this sisler had no helmet and was mostly at risk for this. He was the Ichiro in a time where the stars was Ruth, Lajoie and Speaker was the HR Mainstays and was truly dominated at the sport, and also say this to Ty Cobb (The baseball player not the person) who I think but I may not be right had the record before Sisler He before Musial was the The name when you hear The Cards' and a one of the Legendary Staples of the National League in General. So You can put them both in but you can never take out Sisler, ever.
