Came across this story thats a few months old but was intrigued. It talked about Ria Cortesio a female ump who worked a exhibition game back in march, she had been the first female since 1989.Her goal is to umpire in games that count in the mlb. My question is this, anyone opposed of female umpires? I'm not as long as the right calls are being made but just wondering what everyone else thinks..Also does anyone think coaches would be less hesitant to chew them out on a wrong call?

No...but I would not want to see them resemble some of the 300 lbs umps we have now a days...

Yep. Probably would be a major improvement over some of the umps we have today.

Agreed. Anybody who can do the job. Why is it okay for men to ump at women's games but not the other way around?

Maybe someday we'll be able to get beyond the point where these questions are even asked. I say if they can do it then do it. If some 300 LB female wants to play football and understands all the physical requirements ... then go for it. Calling balls and strikes is a visual issue. As long as she doesn't come in with a blind persons walking stick, I'm fine with a woman making the calls. Understand also that they have to make it to the top on skills just like the men do. As long as she isn't gonna cry when Lou Pinella gets in her face I vote yes, let them ump or no I'm not against it.

No, actually Marc's right. There was one, though I don't know if its still around. Saw an interview with one of the players, oh, about a year ago. As far as I know, they never got a TV deal or anything so I really don't know if the league survived. Can't even remember what it was called... Women's Professional Football League or something.
