| The greatest catch you ever saw I remember Brian McRae of the Royals making a falling, over the shoulder catch of a drive with the bases loaded full of Yankees in the bottom of the eighth inning in a game the Yankees led at the time about 9-1. I laughed because i had bet on the Yankees and figured "good for him!". But I cried as the Royals came up with 9 in the top of the ninth off of Steve Howe and Steve Farr {how far? was my new name for that wretched pair} and gave me the beat that put me out of betting sports for good |

| Re: The greatest catch you ever saw In his younger years Griffy Jr. made some amazing over the wall and crashing into the wall catches for the Mariners. When he was with the Mariners he was one of those players you would actually pay to see play. He was a true phenom while he was still with Seattle. Too bad injuries have taken a few great years away from him. He could have been the best ever. |

| Re: The greatest catch you ever saw How about Derek Jeter's running catch as he crashed into the seats in Yankee stadium? ( July 1st 2004) If he hadn't of caught the ball, the Sox would have scored at least one run and won the game. The catch was also webgem of the year ( and probably the decade). |

| Re: The greatest catch you ever saw There have been so many, from Mays through Torii Hunter. But the one that always sticks with me is that one from a few years ago where the minor leaguer ran through the wall. He DID make that catch, right? |

Anyway, Torii Hunter is where it's at. |

| Re: The greatest catch you ever saw Great question. Off the top of my head... --the Mays catch of the Wertz blast, of course; --Kirby Puckett's at the Metrodome wall in Game Six, 1991 World Series; --the Jeter catch mentioned above and a couple other; --about twenty-five in centerfield by Fred Lynn for the Boston Red Sox, circa 1976-1979; and --any snare that results in an unassisted triple play (though i've never seen one, starting the single rarest event in baseball deserves high status). Cheers!

| Re: The greatest catch you ever saw I saw John Valentin of the Red Sox make an unassisted triple play not that many years ago. I think he hit a grand slam in the same game, or at least a home run. |

| That catch by Jeter was so symbolic. At that time, Garciappara decided he needed a rest that night and asked out of the game. The game was so intense that at the end of the game, all the Red Sox were on the top step of the dugout - except for Nomar who didn't move from his seat. In contrast, you had Jeter crashing face first into the stands and giving up his body for his team. Shortly after that, Nomar was sent packing. |

You can see the stats 'n' stuff here. Cheers all! |

| Re: The greatest catch you ever saw Thanks, it's amazing the things you can remember. Although I cannot remember three things that my wife needs me to get at the store, I can recall things like Valentin's game! I also recall Carlos Baerga, with the Indians, hitting a home run from each side of the plate in the same inning, against the Yankees. I said at the time that this had to be a first, and sure enough it was. He did it against my two buddies, Steve Howe and Steve Farr. God how I hate those two, even to this day. |

| Re: The greatest catch you ever saw Jose Canseco when he played for Texas, oh wait, he didn't make the catch. Still my favorite play ever since I always hated Jose Canseco. For those who may not know what I'm talking about, Canseco went to the wall to make a catch. The ball hit him on top of his head and went over the fence for a HR. |
