Re: Baseball Trivia: Who is the only...

Yeah, Legend. And they've won the World Series twice. Isn't that just a kick in the teeth? I hate the wild card in baseball. It's like an automatic Series bid...rant rant rant.

Cheers, all!

Re: Baseball Trivia: Who is the only...

The wild card, in my opinion, is awesome. Look at it this way....

Braves win the NL East ( 92-70)

Cardinals win the NL Central ( 105- 57)

Dodgers win the NL West ( 84-76)

So these teams advance to the playoffs... BUT let's say the Cubs win 104 games in the NL Central... The Cubs would have the second most wins in the league and still not make the playoffs.

The wild card gives teams stuck in a tough division a chance to make the playoffs. The Marlins were obviously good enough to win the world series! They deserved the playoff spot, and the wild card gave it to them....

This exact type of scenario happened once. The Braves won 104 games and the Giants 103. Giants stayed home that year with the 2nd best record in the major leagues. It was maybe a year or two later when MLB realigned the divisions and changed the playoff structure.

Re: Baseball Trivia: Who is the only...

You guys like winners, but this question is about the ultimate losers. Who was the only regular to hit over .300 for the 1962 Mets?

Don Zimmer...

Nah. The only man to hit .300 for the Innagual '62 Mets was Richie Asburn. The only reason I know that is because there was some conversation I overheard about the Mets, and how Ashburn retired after the '62 season, leaving the Mets with no .300 hitters.

Ashburn hit .306 for the Mets in 1962 at age 35.

O, yes, the 1962 Mets were bad, but what team posted the worst record of all-time?

Cheers.

Re: Baseball Trivia: Who is the only...

Cleveland had a NL team that won only 20 games and lost 134. The year was 1899.

Re: Baseball Trivia: Who is the only...

The 2005 New York Yankees. Hundreds of millions of dollars, chalk full of "superstars" and all they get is a 95-67 record for a .586 winning percentage.

Which is why you need chemistry, not financility. (I'm sure that's not a word.)

Re: Baseball Trivia: Who is the only...

Since it has been so quiet in this thread, I will try to re-energize it. Who were the only three players to knock in over 100 runs in 1968? Two in the AL and one in the NL.

Re: Baseball Trivia: Who is the only...

Frank Howard is one of the three. Yaz had only 74, but won the batting title with a .301 average. Aaron had 86, at age 34, not a bad year for 1968. Two more are still out there. Howard had 44 homers and 106 RBI for a last place club. Always an underrated slugger, there are those who say he hit one out of Yankee Stadium. The ball was called foul, but several
Yankee players said it was fair. He was so huge, I saw him pick up Harmon Killebrew and carry him to the dugout like a sack of potatoes, after Killebrew was hurt in an All Star game. He hit 382 home runs and had over 1100 RBI, playing in two of the toughest hitters parks there were, for awful offensive clubs. Always thought he should have been given more Hall of Fame consideration.
