Best Hitter in Baseball

Some will say Barry Bonds. Other might mention Manny Ramirez. A few will drop the name Alex Rodriguez. Although you can't really go wrong with any of those players in your lineup, I think the best hitter in baseball is Albert Pujols.

This guy guarantees 30+ HR a year, 100+ RBI, a .300+ AVG, 100+ Runs, and less than 100 SO. As long as he's healthy anyway. Of course, he plays 150+ games a year.

He's consistent and you can always count on him, even if he has a slow start. And, after stealing 16 bases in 2005, he's starting to show potential there. Maybe he could become a 20+ stolen base guy. But, that's not a great factor for skilled batting.

So, I say Albert Pujols is the best hitter in baseball. What does everyone else have to say?

my choice

I would have to agree that Albert Pujols is a solid and consistent home run producer. However after looking at the stats my choice would have to be AROD. My reasoning is this. ARODS home run production is right up there with Pujols for the last five years but AROD has busted the 130 mark for RBIS five or six times in his career. In my mind that is what really sets him apart. Producing for your team is what hitters do. This is not home run derby its baseball. Winning gets rings and RBIS get wins. My choice is the solid, clutch, non blinking, fearsome, awesome, consistent, powerful Alex Rodriguez

Re: Best Hitter in Baseball

You are right. He is doing things that few if ever have approached. As ridiculous as his numbers are, there is a record in baseball that gets little attention that even he will never come close to. Lou Gehrig's SEVEN seasons of over 150 RBI! Among the safest records in all of sports. But Pujols is a GREAT hitter, and clutch besides.

Cool Re: Best Hitter in Baseball

In an A-Rod verse Pujols contest, I got to go with A-Rod who has done it longer for three different team, including one in New York...He could have dropped his numbers like Carlos Beltran did (who clearly was on the rise in 2004) before going to New York, but he didn't...

Though, my personsal favorite would have to be Ichiro...who at 5-9 and 172 lbs has put up Hall of Fame numbers on both sides of an Ocean without skipping a beat...we are looking at a one of a kind hitter, with a style all his own...

Though hey, I can be down with Von Hayes...sure why not...I am there...put me down for Von Hayes as well....now the man has two votes...he is in the running

Re: Best Hitter in Baseball

Looking at the past five years....

2001:

Pujols- 37 HRs, 130 RBIs, and .329 BA
Rodriguez- 52 HRs, 135 RBIs, and .318

2002:

Pujols- 34 HRs, 127 RBIs, and .314 BA
Rodriguez- 57 HRs, 142 RBIs, and .300 BA

2003:

Pujols- 43 HRs, 124 RBIs, and .359 BA
Rodriguez- 47 HRs, 118 RBIs, and .298 BA

2004:

Pujols- 46 HRs, 123 RBIs, and .331 BA
Rodriguez- 36 HRs, 106 RBIs, and .286 BA

2005:

Pujols- 41 HRs, 117 RBIs, and .330 BA
Rodriguez- 48 HRs, 130 RBIs, and .321 BA

The five year AVERAGES are:

Pujols: 40 HRs, 124 RBIs, and a .332 BA

Rodriguez: 48 HRs, 126 RBIs, and a .304 BA

The two players are very close... but Rodriguez has more power and a little more run-production. Pujols is probably the better hitter, but not necessarily the better player.

Re: Best Hitter in Baseball

Let me second that, MVB. That is some awesome research work. I wonder -- is there anyone else statistically in the same ballpark as Pujols and A-Rod over that span? Vlad Guerrero or Miguel Tejada, perhaps?

Cool Re: Best Hitter in Baseball

Welcome MVB. Nice to have you aboard. Great job on those stats.

I'd like to add one more: Career slugging percentage:
A-Rod: .577
Pujols: .621

Plus Pujols is much better in the big game. That bomb he hit against Lidge was unreal. Compare that to A-Rod's 0 RBI performance against the Angels.

I think Pujols is the better hitter. But you really could go either way.

Gotham plays his tune and I follow...

I say Vlad Guerrero. I like to see some of those fools put up 44 hrs, 123 and .345 for the Nationals...err...Expos. Try being protected in the lineup from the likes of Lee Stevens and an overrated Troy Glaus. Career .324 average, consistent 35+ hrs and has never struckout over 100 times. And most of that on crappy teams.

Wedge..you faithful rat you...this is what I am talking about...Vlad...sure he merits consideration...I mean huge upside...Hall of Fame upside...and he "did time" in Montreal...legit MVP candidate year in and year out...now if I could have just gotten you to back me on Von Hayes you'd be aces!!!

Hee Sop Choi.

No other player in baseball hit 7 home runs in 4 games last year.
