The New York Times' Murray Chass has a great article up on the history of the Winter Meetings in baseball. They begin this year tomorrow and last a week.

Here are som historical moves that have occured in years past during the winter meetings:

1999: Twins traded Jared Camp to the Marlins for Johan Santana (both minor leaguers at the time).

2002: Twins released David Ortiz.

2005: Mets acquired Paul Lo Duca from Florida and signed Jose Valentin. Todd Jones signed the Tigers to be their closer and Trevor Hoffman re-signed with the Padres.

2003: The Red Sox brought in Keith Foulke who ended up helping them to a World Series victory. Also, St. Louis and Atlanta partenered up in a trade. St. Louis sent JD Drew to Atlanta for Jason Marquis...however Adam Wainright was also in the deal...going to St. Louis where he ended up helping the Cards as closer to a World Series three years later.
