Unanimous HOF Choice

so, is this finally the year ?

we have Ripken Jr and Tony Gwynn

can either of them get 100% yes votes ?

never happened before

not DiMaggio or Williams or Mays or Mantle

are any of this years candidates more worthy then them ?

Re: Unanimous HOF Choice

How could anyone say no?

I would say both will get in unanimously because they have the career numbers, the longevity and the respect of their peers and the media.

I doubt either gets in unanimously. Some old curmudgeon will keep them off the list, I bet you.

I will give them the nod.

But, McGwire is the real question!

Re: Unanimous HOF Choice

Yeah, some bitter, old New York fan won't vote for Cal because he wouldn't sit down and give the younger guys some playing experience. Definitely not a team player.

He'll vote for Scott Brosius instead :P

Re: Unanimous HOF Choice

I agree, they deserve it.

But McGuire. I'm not trying to stir anything up. But before the alligations of steroids came around, he and Sosa kept baseball alive with the home run race in the 90's. You are also talking about a player that as a rookie hit I believe 49 homeruns. But please someone show me the positive steroid test. You can not justifiably deny someone his right because of someone else's word, and mind you the word of someone who did it himself. As in the court of law, you should be innocent until proven guilty.

I understand his testimony before the senate or congress (whatever it was) brings up a lot of questions. But there is no solid proof!

No one gets 100%...those that don't vote for them will say that first ballot belongs to Gods of the Sports...all 2-3 of them...

True not even Seaver got in with 100% and he was the top but Tony Gwynn and Cal Ripken are in easy.

McGwire will get in...someday, just not this year.

The baseball writers (at least some of them), I've read are going to hold McGwire accountable for what we all pretty much know went down during his career. Especially after his terrible performance in front of Congress a few years ago. He said he didn't want to talk about the past (in pleading the fifth)...HOF voters said well they'll forget his on-field past in that case.

Re: Unanimous HOF Choice

Cobb got more votes than Ruth did, and he got "just" 98% to Ruth's 95%. Joe DiMaggio got 89 %, and Mickey Mantle 88 %, so don't expect Ripken or Gwynn to come close to 100%. The baseball writers are too arrogant to admit that anyone is that automatic a lock. Could you imagine getting the chance to ask the jackasses who didn't vote for someone like Stan Musial what more he needed to do be in on the first try?
