Free Agent Starting Pitchers 2007 List

Jason Schmidt
Roger Clemens
Barry Zito
Mike Mussina
Ted Lilly
Andy Pettite
Vincente Padilla
Jeff Weaver
Greg Maddux
Jamie Moyer
Mark Mulder
Shawn Chacon
Miguel Batista
Randy Wolf
Gil Meche
Rodrigo Lopez

Thanks to MLBTradeRumors for the list, here are some good or interesting starting pitchers on the free agent market this off-season. Note that some or most of these guys could simply reach a new deal with their current team but at this time, have not.

My thoughts:

Jason Schmidt- will sign with the Yanks or Red Sox
Roger Clemens- sign with Boston or retire
Barry Zito- sign with the Mets
Mike Mussina- sign with the Red Sox ( or possibly the ChiSox)
Ted Lilly- sign with the Yanks
Andy Pettite- re sign with the Astros
Vincente Padilla- sign with the Braves
Jeff Weaver- resign with the Cardinals
Greg Maddux- resign with the Dodgers
Jamie Moyer- sign with the Cubs
Mark Mulder- sign with the Mets, Yanks, or White Sox
Shawn Chacon- sign with Houston
Miguel Batista- sign with Arizona
Randy Wolf- to the Indians
Gil Meche- stays with Seattle
Rodrigo Lopez- signs with the Yanks or Jays

I would hope that the Yanks would pursue Jason Schmidt and possibly Barry Zito. And that Daisuke Matsuzaka will probably be posted, I think hes worth looking at.

I hear lots of teams will be interested and looking to get him. He's supposedly a great young starting pitcher with some of the nastiest stuff in the East. Plus, it will cost nearly $20 million for the right to negotiate a contract with him.

And Soriano, keep up the Yogisms...they're always great

Re: Free Agent Starting Pitchers 2007 List

The Mets will probably look into Jason Schmidt and Barry Zito during the 2007 Off-Season because Omar Minaya has expressed that he likes power-pitchers and also Barry Zito. If Barry Zito joins the Mets, he is projected to be second in their rotation replacing Tom Glavine who will likely retire at the end of the season. It should be an interesting off-season as they also pursue to sign Alfonso Soriano. However, the Mets have a payroll and budget to abide to so it would be a pleasure to watch them manage their expenses. On the other hand, the Mets brought in a chunk of revenue on ticket sales this season with Carlos Delgado and David Wright filling up the seats.

As for Roger Clemens, will he finally retire?

Welcome to the GoTeamsGo Fan Forum, alv127.

"The Rocket" claims that Andy Pettite encouraged him to join the Astros. Do you think he will backstab the Astros and go somewhere else? Dont forget that his son, Koby, is in their farm system!

Re: Free Agent Starting Pitchers 2007 List

Correct, alv127. Roger Clemens officially began his MLB career back in '84 with the Boston Red Sox. However, Roger Clemens will go whenever money is. Baseball players don't care about teams as you can see with Yankees' OF, Johnny Damon. As one of the biggest contributor to Boston's 2004 Reverse the Curse WS win, he went to the Yankees because Steinbrenner pulled out his wallet to get rid of competition.

Re: Free Agent Starting Pitchers 2007 List

I think the mets might spike their payroll once again. In the past years they have shown that they are willing to hand over the big bucks to get who they want. I would go with Zito over Shmidt because i just love that great 12-6. That thing starts in your eyes and ends at your knees.

Soriano has to be on the mets list. He could fill either of their two holes(outfield or second base). Adding his speed and power to that lineup would be great.
