| R.I.P. Buck O'Neil Dead at 94 The baseball world lost one of it's most special people yesterday when Buck O'Neil passed away. Since the Hall of Fame induction ceremonies this Summer, O'Neil had encountered health problems that forced him into and out of the hospital. He died at the young age of 94. O'Neil became a national figure when he was interviewed as apart of Ken Burns' "Baseball" Documentary in the mid-1990s. Since then, he's become one of the most revered figures in baseball. He was a member of the Negro Leagues and played along side the greats like Satchel Paige, Jackie Robinson among others. After his playing days were over he broke two huge color barriers in the game. He became the first black scout for the major leagues and then was the first black manager for the Chicago Cubs. He was instrumental in the creation of the Negro Leagues Museum in Kansas City. Most recently, they set up a fund-raiser in his name. Their goal is to raise $1 Million to build the John Buck O'Neal Education and Research Center. Up to recently, they only raised over $100,000. He missed being inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame this year but was chosen to represent the 17 men and woman from the Negro Leagues and pre-Negro Leagues. He did so with class and humor and he will be missed. Deadspin: Buck O'Neil Safe At Home Andrew Olmsted: Buck O'Neil, 1911-2006 Crooks And Liars - Buck O'Neil R.I.P. ESPN News |
