| A baseball poem The January 1949 issue of Sport Magazine ran a poem written by the American humorist and poet Ogden Nash. The poem, entitled "Lineup for Yesterday" was a classic if you are a fan of the game, and in it Nash associated each letter of the alphabet with a baseball star from years gone by. I have endeavored to update this poem, viewing the sport and players of today. A is for A-Rod The best in the game When he plays poorly The fans are to blame B is for Bonds With his bat full of thunder Soon he’ll pass Aaron But we always will wonder C is for Clemens His right arm for hire A few years from now Perhaps Roger will retire D is for Delgado He can hit ‘em and catch ‘em The Mets pay him to stand For our National Anthem E is for Everett A shortstop named Adam You’ll be put out for sure If you hit the ball at him F is for Franco Julio plays with such surety His goal is to homer While on Social Security G is for Griffey Ken never plays a whole season Why he missed half a year When he hurt himself sneezin’ H is for Howard Young Mister Ryan If this Phillie connects He leaves pitchers cryin’ I is for Ichiro Every hurler admits There’s not much they can do To stop his 200 hits J is for Jeter The soul of the Yankees When he is finally done New York will run out of hankies K is for Kansas City My first gut reaction Is to solve all their problems With an act of contraction L is for Leyland He won’t get too cocky Jim won with the Tigers But not as a Rockie M is for Manny As strong as a tree But when he don’t wanna play He says, “It’s me being me” N is for Nomar Garciaparra’s the man When he plays well He can act like a Hamm O is for Ortiz Who hits in the clutch Some players do little Big Papi does much P is for Pedro Now try not to laugh The Mets had a cow When he injured his calf Q is for Quaintest Wrigley Field gets my vote No pennants fly there Because of a goat R is for Roy The Astro and the Blue Jay Oswalt’s Houston’s ace The other’s no Halladay S is for Santana No one wants to face Johan Along with Morneau and Mauer Minnesota will go on T is for Torre Turns out he wasn’t so dumb With a ring for each finger Joe needs one for his thumb U is for Utley He keeps his club in the race Where would Philly be If it weren’t for Chase V is for Varitek The catcher from Boston When he played they won a title When he didn’t, they lost one W is for Washington Where baseball returned If they can just pay their players What they think they have earned X is for X-Rays Of Wood and Mark Prior If I told you they pitched You’d call me a liar Y is for Young Texas’s Michael It’s not really news If Mike hits for the cycle Z is for Zito The invaluable lefty If the A’s want to keep him His price will be hefty
