Grimsley Accused Clemens and Others

LOS ANGELES — Roger Clemens, Andy Pettitte and Miguel Tejada were among the players that a former major league pitcher accused of using performance-enhancing drugs, according to a federal agent's affidavit, the Los Angeles Times reported Saturday on its Web site.

The agent for Clemens and Pettitte denied the accusations. Baltimore teammates Brian Roberts, Jay Gibbons and Tejada also were implicated in the sworn statement, the Times said; an Orioles spokeswoman said the team had not seen the report and had no comment.

In June, federal agents searched reliever Jason Grimsley's home in Arizona after the pitcher admitted using human growth hormone, steroids and amphetamines. Grimsley was later released by the Arizona Diamondbacks and suspended 50 games by Major League Baseball, and has not played since then.

In a 20-page search warrant affidavit signed by IRS Special Agent Jeff Novitzky, the Times reported, he said Grimsley identified other players who had used drugs. Those names were blacked out when the document was released.

According to the affidavit, the Times said, Grimsley told investigators Clemens and Pettitte "used athletic performance-enhancing drugs."

The affidavit also alleged Grimsley told federal agents that Roberts, Gibbons and Tejada "took anabolic steroids."

Sadly, I see Clemens name and think that it makes sense. He's stayed so good for so long, longer than most people could've imagined, that it make it all too easy to accept that he had chemical assistance. Don't know about the Orioles guys, though. Not to sound flippant here, but you'd think if they were on something, they'd be winning more, you know?

Re: Grimsley Accused Clemens and Others

Here's the LA Times story

This is pretty big news as you had to have known the blacked out names would get out sooner or later. In a case like this, you'd think Grimsely has no reason to lie and implicate guys from his past.

Pettite's name involved surprises me but I guess we shouldn't be surprised about anyone from that era. Clemens has been eyed for a while by the public and this only adds to it. Tejada possibly using anabolic steroids is big but it's not like we can go back and find out. He'll just deny it.

Clemens? I wouldn't be shocked but at the same time, he works out like 6 hours a day.

If I'm not mistaken, this isn't the first time Tejada's been fingered, right? Palmiero implicated him too, right?

Don't forget about that SI Article about Clemens and his workout regimen years ago. Andy Pettite has been his workout buddy for years, dating back to their Yankee days. Coincidentally, when Jason Grimsely was their teammate.

Baltimore teammates Brian Roberts, Jay Gibbons....
Wow, the steroids have had an amazing impacts on these guys....

This is the way I look at it:

Grimsley had been taking steroids for years. He'd been lying to us, his fans, and baseball for years.

Why should we believe ANYTHING he says now?

I don't know what to believe anymore, MVB.

Brian Roberts has that weird eye thing going on to enhance his view of the ball.

Re: Grimsley Accused Clemens and Others

Until all the facts are out. who knows who is telling the truth?
Would anyone expect Clemens and Pettite to say, "Oh my, you caught us!"? Pettite would jump off a bridge is Clemens told him to.

It will be a long time before we ever get anything close to the truth, if ever. It is too late to test anybody, so unless there is tangible proof linking these players to steroids, we will never know.

And that's what is hurt the game. Nobody knows anything besides Bonds/McGwire/Sosa/Palmeiro/Canseco and all the recent positive tests. Everyone who played in the previous era is under suspicion. It sucks, but it's reality.

Re: Grimsley Accused Clemens and Others

i remember hearing about Clemens workouts routine when he was in Toronto

but from what i have heard, the steroids arent so much to make you stronger, but make you recover quicker

maybe normally you could go on the 15 day DL from an injury, maybe with the steroids youre out a week

thats how ive been understanding it

please correct me if im wrong

I'm no expert but I believe anabolic steroids allow you to work out more as they help your body heal quicker than it would naturally. For instance, instead of only being able to work out 4 times a week, you can do it 6 or 7 times a week.

That's why Clemens and his "rigid workout regimen" always comes under scrutiny.

Yeah...he is a workout horse.

Now if most of the league is on steriods...including the pitcher...and its roids against roids...doesn't that make Barry bonds record legit again?
