| McNair courageous, but HOF will be tough call Samari Rolle referred to Steve McNair as HOF timber. There is no doubt McNair is the consummate NFL warrior. There is no question about his heart as he played thru injury after injury with taped and numb body parts for 13 seasons. But getting into Canton will be an uphill battle. The list of latter day quarterbacks who have made it into the Hall but not led their team to a Super Bowl, or NFL or AFL championship is short. He will be considered because of a rare statistical distinction. He is 1 of 3 quarterbacks to pass for 30000 yards and rush for 3500. The other two are Steve Young and Fran Tarkenton. During his heyday at Tennessee, he often dragged the team down the field on sheer will power alone. Except for that 1 yard that snatched victory from the Titans agains the Rams in January 2000, HOF status wouldnt be nearly the challenge it is. To be judged fairly, electors for the HOF must include not only titles, yards and tds, but how big the heart. McNair courageous, but Hall will be tough call -- baltimoresun.com McNair's heart was huge. I cant express my admiration for this guy enough. His arm was almost as big.

| Re: McNair courageous, but HOF will be tough call No way in heck this guy is Hall of Fame Material...I would sooner have Bernie Kosar in there or Don Meredith or 20 other more worthy guys who are also not of Hall quality...heck, give me Randall Cunningham over him if you want a running/throwing QB.

Just curious, how do his receiving corps compare to some other QBs with similar yardage numbers, like the aforementioned DeBerg? |

Well that is a valid point...McNair did do it with crappy receivers...Deberg had little in San Fran, better at Tampa Bay, and I think a good corp at K.C...so, yeah, who did McNair really have? |

McNair had quite the cannon for an arm also. Thus, the nickname, Air McNair. So Cunningham could punt--we are talking about quarterbacks, not punters. All things being equal, and both quarterbacks at the top of their game, I think it would be a pretty tough call. That said, I am a Randall Cunningham fan also. One game does not a quarterback make. But he dismantled more than one team. Still, Cunningham was the prototype for the running quarterbacks of today. Dont think the defenses knew how to cope with them then. |
