Baltimore Ravens QB Search

According to the Baltimore Sun, the Ravens are desperately hoping that the Titans cut QB Steve McNair. They want to sign him. However, if that doesn't work out, they're talking to Atlanta about a deal involving Matt Schaub. What happened to Kerry Collins? I though for sure he was a slam-dunk to wind up back with Jim Fassel as a Raven?

Re: Baltimore Ravens QB Search

Lots of rumors in raven land these days. A lot of talk right now is that they are seriosuly looking to draft a QB too. I'm truly anxious to see what takes place on the quaterback front. Recent comments by coach Billick indicate he still has a lot of confidence in Kyle Boller but I wonder if much of that is really a smokescreen. I think all in all McNair has a better demeanor and leadership side than does Collins and that may be what they most want Boller to see at this point in his development.

Hmm... that could well be. McNair definitely is a great leader, and he could probably help Boller learn quite a bit about how to play the game. If that's what they're looking for, he'd be a good signing. If there's looking for someone to actually out and out replace Boller, though, that's another story.

Re: Baltimore Ravens QB Search

I agree but a replacement is not found in Collins either. More likley if that is the plan they go move up and draft another QB then cut/trade Boller and sign Collins as the qb for a year or two. Probably not a likley scenario but either way Collins is a short term answer at best as is McNair.

Re: Baltimore Ravens QB Search

I have to admit I'm perplexed as to why they wouldn't have traded a second round pick for Culpeper. Yes I know about his knee but it isn't like they have no one to fill in while that rehabs. It isn't as if any qb they sign at this point comes without risk! That seemed like a no brainer to me...but maybe that's why I don't work for them.

Come to think of it I don't think they've asked my opinion in quite some time...hmmm

I really don't understand a lot of Billick's thinking about QBs, really. I'm still scatching my head over his cutting Trent Dilfer after the Super Bowl to sign Elvis Grbac. Man, was that ever a stinker of a move!

Cool Re: Baltimore Ravens QB Search

Agreed Lefty about Billick. The thing is: If they sign McNair, it means they're going for the whole thing this year. Are they good enough to do that? Is the QB the only thing that's keeping the Ravens back? If not, then I wouldn't go for McNair or Collins. I would give Harrington a shot. Rave, Lefty?

Re: Baltimore Ravens QB Search

Aside from the defense getting old and the fact that they've got the wrong guy starting at RB, I guess they're in pretty good shape. Tough division this year, though, so realistically I'm not sure they can be considered contenders. In today's era of parity/medocrity (choose your term), its getting increasingly harder to predict how a team will perform from year to year.

Re: Baltimore Ravens QB Search

Well does it mean they are going for the whole thing or does it mean they need:

Something to hold the water in the dam so they keep their jobs and then can build forward

Someone to show the mental leadership to a young Boller they still (gulp) believe in

Someone to use as a vet for the new young guy they bring in through the draft this year or next.

I don't think they are a QB away. But they also don't have time to build for tomorrow, the leash is short and they must do something to win today to buy a tomorrow while still allowing a succesful tomorrow. Lucky them.
