Troy Smith Debuts With Ravens Rookies

OWINGS MILLS, Md. - On his first day as a professional football player, Troy Smith was merely one of 29 rookies trying to land a job with the Baltimore Ravens. "I'm at the bottom of the totem pole right now," he said. "I have that understanding."

His Heisman Trophy, the 54 touchdown passes he threw at Ohio State and even the No. 10 he wore as the nation's finest college football player were only a memory Friday at the team's rookie camp.

Smith, the last player drafted in the fifth round of the NFL draft, informally launched his NFL career on a beautiful spring morning wearing a purple jersey with the No. 11 on it. Most of his passes were on target; some were not.

"We've got to try to have him be able to do a few more things with the ball," Ravens offensive coordinator Rick Neuheisel said. "He's got a fastball. Now we have to work on some other pitches."

I voted never. He's a pretty good athlete, but he's not an NFL quarterback.

Never. He wasn't picked to be a starting QB. He'll be a third stringer at best.

I voted 2009 or later. I don't think he will be a starting QB, but he will get a chance to start at some point. Heck, even Craig Krenzel got an opportunity. After McNair, all they have is Boller. Is he that much better than Smith for him not to get a shot?

Ditto...he is not an NFL starter...a pinch hitter maybe...but he doesn't have it...not right now anyway...perhaps by way of the CFL...

come on witht he new craze in the nfl for an athletic qb, im sure he gets a shot wen mcnair leaves. I belive if they actually stuck to kyle boller instead of dogging him and never letting him play a full year he would of been a good starter for them(waits to get flamed for that comment) im sure troy smith will get a chance at some point, what was the last qb that won the heismen and never got a shot at starting. My vote is by the start of 2009

I think McNair has one good year left in him and after he leaves I see the Ravens doing a total rebuilding effort at least offensively so I vote for 2008 Smith gets a shot at starting.
