| Re: Baltimore Ravens Super Bowl odds 10-to-1, eh? Looks like people are starting to notice the Ravens; they're not the best kept secret in the AFC anymore. So what do you think of the odds they're getting? How confident are you that this team could make a Super Bowl run this season?

| Re: Baltimore Ravens Super Bowl odds Personally, I believe the AFC has two elite teams in the Chargers and the Ravens, then the rest of the conference. While the Chargers are the consensus number one in most circles, I am hesitant to anoint as the class of the AFC. I would probably place the Chargers over the Ravens by a slim margin simply because of LaDainian Tomlinson, but it wouldn't be by much. I honestly think the Ravens have the best defense in the NFL. They have crazy talent and versatility. Ray Lewis is the superstar of the bunch, but I would say he is their third best linebacker at the moment. That is not a knock on Lewis, because he is the type of fiery leader and smart veteran they need in the middle, but a testament to the their unheralded linebackers. Adalius Thomas means so much to that defense. He has an enormous part in their gameplans each and every week. The guy can line up virtually anywhere and be highly productive. Schematics are huge in playoff football, so a weapon like Thomas is all the more valuable as he can really create confusion for the offense. Bart Scott has blossomed into a stud under Lewis' guidance. He is the least publicized of the bunch, but probably deserved to be playing in Hawaii. Watch him in January, he's special. Their defensive line is similarly built. Terrell Suggs is a natural pass rusher, but has the ability to play on the edge so the Ravens can give the opposing team some 3-4 looks. Trevor Pryce is a solid compliment to Suggs, as he can rotate inside or outside and play in multiple schemes effectively. The tandem form good bookends. Rookie Haloti Ngata has earned his pay by occupying blocks to keep the linebackers free and stopping the run. Kelly Gregg isn't talented or athletically gifted, but he is the type of blue collar, tough, scrappy player that every defense needs and every coach loves. The secondary has centerfielder Ed Reed, who is the best safety since Ronnie Lott in my mind. Chris McAlister has stepped up over the past two years, and I have him as my second best cornerback in the NFL. Samari Rolle was possibly the most overrated cornerback a few years ago, but he is a good fit in Baltimore as a number two. Rookie Dawan Landry has emerged as a promising strong safety, but he still has mental lapses. However, I am not as thrilled with their offense. I can't quite put my finger on it, but there is something about them that makes me weary. If this team goes far, the defense should get the lion's share of credit. |
