| Tigers lead way in shift to young players There have been days in Auburn coaches meetings when one position coach would trade a player to another position coach. Just trade 'em. Subtle things, like defensive end to defensive tackle. Wacky things, like Tristan Davis from running back to safety to running back again. Those were the easy days. The philosophy-changing days came in the most recent months when various assistant coaches began clamoring in the early stages of fall practice for true freshmen to play. Their plea grew louder more recently and more true freshmen have been thrown in the mix. After having only one true freshman earn sophomore status last year, Auburn has used 13 true freshmen, 10 of whom are on scholarship, in just four games this season. Another 11 redshirt freshmen have played. "That can't be right," coach Tommy Tuberville said when quizzed. But it is right. Auburn started three true freshmen last Saturday in the offensive line for the first time since freshmen were allowed to begin playing in 1972 and was so impressed with the outcome that the Tigers may do it again at Florida on Saturday.
