The coaches spent Sunday trying to determine the direction of a team that is ranked 100th in the nation in total offense, and whether Kodi Burns or Brandon Cox would be the primary quarterback the rest of the season. Burns, a true freshman, replaced the veteran Cox in Saturday's 19-14 loss to Mississippi State. Nobody said Sunday who would start this Saturday against New Mexico State. "We won't divulge who will be the starter," Tuberville said. Burns and Cox are different quarterbacks. Burns made his college debut Saturday as a slippery runner who had 22 carries, but doesn't know the entire playbook. Cox has 20 wins as a starter and is a traditional dropback passer, but has struggled this season. Auburn is looking to balance the experience of the fifth-year senior Cox with the promise that Burns could bring to this season and beyond. The Tigers have invested a lot of time in a Cox-run offense over the last three years, but the slow start to this season has forced Auburn to look for immediate and long-range help. Burns brings a spark, the coaches say, and is a change-of-pace to Cox. Burns' unpredictability as a runner could also give defensive coordinators pause. Cox's passing could force the opposition to work overtime in preparing for Auburn. Who'll play QB still hot topic for Borges, Tuberville- al.com
