Auburn working on '08 slate

AUBURN -- The Auburn Tigers are close to scheduling their 2008 home opener, which is only one week before a nationally watched game at West Virginia, senior associate athletics director Mark Richard said.

Auburn has two spots left to fill on the 2008 slate.

The first game -- on Aug. 31, 2008 -- will give the Tigers valuable work before their Sept. 6 trip to Morgantown. Richard said the opener would probably be filled by a team from Division I-A, now known as Football Bowl Subdivision.

Auburn's other scheduled non-conference game is Oct. 18 against Southern Mississippi at Jordan-Hare Stadium. The Tigers' final non-conference game likely would be on Nov. 1 or Nov. 8.

After a rough road schedule this season, most of Auburn's toughest SEC challengers come to Jordan-Hare in 2008.

The Tigers will host games in 2008 against Arkansas, LSU, Georgia and Tennessee, while traveling to Mississippi State, Ole Miss, Alabama and Vanderbilt.

Auburn played BCS opponents Kansas State and South Florida this year. The university announced this summer that it would play a two-game series with Clemson in 2010 and 2011.

In more distant scheduling news, Richard said he hoped a return game to Kansas State in 2014 could be played at Arrowhead Stadium in Kansas City.

-- FOND FAREWELL: Senior defensive end Quentin Groves, a Greenville, Miss., native, is playing his final game against one of his home-state teams.

"I think I have an added weight because I always want to have a good showing against them, because they were a team that I was looking forward to going to," Groves said.

Groves said he actually grew up a Tennessee fan, but favored Mississippi State, Georgia and Auburn in the recruiting process.
