Teammates say Auburn freshman QB Burns playing larger role in practice

AUBURN -- Is the Kodi Burns era about to begin a year ahead of schedule? Or is Auburn prudently preparing a reserve quarterback for emergency action?

Burns was not made available to the media Tuesday, but interviews with several other players suggested that Burns is playing a larger role in practice this week.

Senior Brandon Cox is still Auburn's starting quarterback, but Burns, a true freshman from Fort Smith, Ark., may be warming up in the bullpen.

"He looks good. They're giving him the same treatment Florida gave (Tim) Tebow last year," said receiver Robert Dunn, referring to the special sets Florida created for its freshman quarterback in 2006.

"They're kind of putting him in and letting him run a couple draws here and there. Y'all will just have to wait until Saturday to see what's going on."
Senior defensive end Quentin Groves said he's been impressed with Burns.
"I just got a glimpse of it today, but from what I've seen, he looks pretty good," he said.

Re: Teammates say Auburn freshman QB Burns playing larger role in practice

I say let the new QB era begin this Saturday. Brandon Cox is a total momentum killer for the Tiger offense. He has started for three years, yet looks like he is stepping onto the field for the first time in his career. Whenever he gets the slightest bit of pressure, he looks like a deer in the headlights. As a fifth year senior, Cox should show a lot better leadership and judgment on the field, yet he consistently makes stupid decisions like throwing into double coverage and taking sacks when he could easily get rid of the ball. To stop him, all the defense has to do is watch his helmet, as he locks onto his intended receiver the moment the ball is snapped. With Cox in the game, it is going to be a very long year for the Auburn faithful. There will be very little offense to cheer for, as all the opposition has to do is shut down the run, because they know Cox will complete as many passes to the defense and the ground as he will to the offense. It is past time to put a new quarterback in, as there is no way he would screw up the offense any worse than Brandon Cox.
