Offense, defense share praise in Friday night's workout

Quarterback Brandon Cox claimed he was never sacked in Friday night's scrimmage.

Then, glancing over to defensive end Quentin Groves, Cox said, "He might have a different answer."

Auburn's second closed scrimmage of the preseason, which lasted until about 9 p.m. Friday, was open to different interpretations. There was no tidy storyline, but Cox and head coach Tommy Tuberville said enough went well that each unit could feel good about its contributions.

"I wouldn't say it was an offensive scrimmage or a defensive scrimmage," Cox said. "We had our highlights and they had their highlights. I guess that's good."

Dark clouds, light rain and brief lightning threatened to disrupt the scrimmage at Jordan-Hare Stadium, but players stuck it out and were rewarded by a cooler-than-usual evening.

Unlike last week's scrimmage, which included a serious injury to backup quarterback Neil Caudle, this one was injury-free, Tuberville said. "Nobody got hurt, which is the No. 1 thing," he said. "A couple of guys got banged up, but it was just minor."
