Goal is to stay sharp for opener

With so much idle time between games that don't count and the ones that do, the Hawks had to tinker a bit with their practice plans.

A practice moved up here, another moved back there and voila, the path to one of the Hawks' biggest nights of the season — Friday's regular-season opener against Dallas at Philips Arena — comes into focus.

"It's like a countdown now, and all you can do is just work hard and make sure you're ready when the lights come on," forward Josh Smith said.
The week-long cushion leaves the Hawks with plenty of time to think of creative ways to keep the edge they sharpened with a 7-1 exhibition mark. And they're full of theories.

"We need to crank it up even more now," guard/forward Josh Childress said after the Hawks' Friday practice, which was followed by a basketball clinic the players put on for Special Olympians. "The most important thing we need to do, and I say this with all sincerity, is make practice harder than the games.
