Michael Vick Will Be Free in Mid-2009, But He's Done in the NFL

Atlanta Falcons quarterback Michael Vick was sentenced this morning to 23 months in federal prison. Under federal law, he'll have to serve 85 percent of his sentence and he'll be eligible to spend the last month of the sentence in a halfway house.

Overall, he's likely to get out of prison some time in the spring or summer of 2009 -- early enough in the year that he could report in time for an NFL training camp.

But that's not going to happen. Vick is currently serving an "indefinite" suspension, courtesy of NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell. And although at some point Goodell is likely to change "indefinite" to a specific period of time, there's no way Goodell wants Vick walking out of prison and into an NFL team's practice facility. I'd be shocked if Vick isn't suspended for at least a full year beyond his prison term.

That means he's going to miss a bare minimum of three full NFL seasons, and at that point, I just don't see any team wanting him. By the time training camps open for the 2010 season, Vick will be 30 years old, rusty as a passer, and guaranteed to turn whatever training camp he plays in into a circus. NFL coaches just don't want to deal with a player like that.

Vick will be a free man in a year and a half. But he won't be an NFL player ever again.

Not so sure about that, at least not the way they were talking on ESPN Countdown last night. They seemed to feel if Vick really has changed his ways, Goodell wont add to it. He wants to see people get their lives turned around. This is of course if he stays in football shape.
It will be interesting to see what other sports people say.

Hmm, I thought I had posted a comment, but it's not here.

Anyway, he'll get another crack, if he's physically able to play. Everyone deserves at least one second chance.

He should be in great shape when he gets out. What else does he have to do in prison other than lift weights. Have you ever seen how cut some guys are when they get out of prison? He may be rusty as a passer, but do you think he may get a chance to be a RB on a bad team?

It happens to the best of us Lefty. Especially as we get a little older. Old brain doesnt function as well as it should. And memory is the first thing to go.

Wide receiver was mentioned as well. Because of the complexity of the quarterback position, no one seems to think he will be able to do that again.

Again? Heck, he was barely a quarterback at any point in his career. It was always his legs, not his arm or his head, that carried him.

To be fair to the guy, I have seen him have some really good games. I remember a game against the Browns? and he threw 4 TD passes, not runs.

Re: Michael Vick Will Be Free in Mid-2009, But He's Done in the NFL

look at the NFL right now ........ let's say he got out of jail this July and PETA was ok with him

was there any team in the NFL this season he could have played a game at QB for this year ?

(of course we assume he is in great shape)

Atlanta .... yes their QB position is a mess
Arizona .... yes both Warner and Leinart are hurt
Washington ..... yes Campbell is hurt
Jacksonville ....... yes he is better then Grey
Miami ........ yes .. for the love of God he cant be worse then what they have had
Giants ..... yes when Eli was hurt
Philly ..... yes when Donovan was hurt
Oakland ...... Hell Yes
Jets ....... Hell Yes
Chicago ...... Hell Yes
Titans ...... yes when VY was hurt

there off the top of my head are 11 teams i believe he could have had a shot with at some point this season

Yep. By 2009, the outrage will have blown over and Vick will get a fair shot to come back, if he's earned it.

I think you're right. Lots of folks already think he was given too harsh a sentence and think he's just being made the poster boy cause of who he is.

To be honest I really don't give a flying rats arse where he goes as long as it's not into a falcon uniform again.
