Petrino’s in over his head

By Terence Moore | Monday, October 8, 2007, 06:25 PM
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution

Commenting on this blog will be re-opened Tuesday morning.
Flowery Branch — Even by Falcons standards, this is bad.
Jerry Glanville’s circus had its messy stretches. So did the June Jones era, punctuated by the lovely Jeff George yelling and spitting unprintable things into the coach’s face on the sidelines.
This is worse.
This is Marion Campbell or Dan Henning bad.

Re: Petrino’s in over his head

College coaches rarely make the transition to the NFL. Looks like Petrino's just going to be another footnote along those lines.

Does he get canned at the end of his first year, you think?

Re: Petrino’s in over his head

Looking at the remaining schedule I see ugly getting uglier. Gandy is out with an ACL and the OL roster is thin – Crumpler is disenchanted – MeAngelo is pissed – and on and on it goes. Why do owners think success in college means success in the NFL?

No I don't see that happening. The more likely event would be him going back to college at the end of the year if anything. For the most part though I think he stays.

Blank showed with Mora he won't wait forever. Mora's 1st was good, 2nd and 3d were terrible. Mora got a contract extension in spring 06 and in Jan 07 he got the toe in the hiney so that shows Blank won't mess around if you can't produce.

Right now Petrino will probably look at this year like (1) unbelievable adversity has set him back further than the avg first yr coach (2) next year he'll have players he wants on the team (via draft/trade, etc). He himself will probably want to see at least 2yrs in the big league otherwise he will look like a weenie big time for bailing out early.

If he shows no progress next year he might quit before Blank fires him. But 3yrs max imo and it all stems on how much progression he shows.

Re: Petrino’s in over his head

A contrite Crumpler apologized for his public criticism of Petrino.

"We're on the same page and I think everybody in our organization is on the same page," Crumpler said. "We're about winning and finding ways to win.

"I hate that my frustrations got the best of me right after the game, but we cleared the air."

Petrino said he wished Crumpler had stated his concerns in private, but there would be no punishment.

The bigger concern is recovering from last week's 20-13 loss at Tennessee, when the Falcons couldn't take advantage of five turnovers.

Cool Re: Petrino’s in over his head

Wow. That's pretty strong stuff for a columnist to write.

If you are referring to the piece by Terence Moore let it be said he doesn’t have a great deal of credibility in the Atlanta area. Terence spends an inordinate amount of column space wailing at the moon. He is our very own Jessie Jackson / Al Sharpton rolled into one. He will not offer anything positive regarding a Falcons coach unless he is black. His perception is so distorted he is thought of as a fringe lunatic peering through black and white glasses.
