ESPN's Chris Mortensen is reporting that NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell will not be "extreme" in his suspension of Falcons quarterback Michael Vick, and that anyone who thinks Vick will be suspended for life is wrong.

Goodell also has told Gene Upshaw, executive director of the NFL Players' Association, that he will "have an open mind" about Vick's ultimate discipline from the league. The source said it would be a mistake to assume that Goodell will be extreme with Vick's jail sentence, saying anybody who is talking about a lifetime ban for Vick or even a three-year suspension is sadly mistaken.

Good grief, I can't believe this was even discussed with any legitimacy. Seems like most people are at one extreme or the other in this case - other they don't believe he did anything wrong (he did) or that this isn't a big deal (it is), or they want the guy thrown in jail for a decade, banned from the NFL for sixteen lifetimes, and maybe drawn and quartered for good measure. Everyone, including Michael Vick, deserves a second chance.

Doesn't matter. Any team that signs him is in for a living hell for animal rights activists as in PETA who firebomb their enemies. Whether Vick is allowed back in the NFL or not no team will sign him and if they do they are in for one hell of a bumpy ride right or wrong.

I mean I can see if he pulls a Nicole Richie and does all of 82 minutes in jail, but if not...if he does what the law requires...let it be.

Yep, and on this, I agree with you. Making it an indefinite suspension and considering time served was definitely the right way to do this. If he serves two years in jail, a smaller suspension will do. If it's just a minor sentence, then make the suspension longer. But a lifetime ban? I can't see that, not in this case, not if Rae Carruth never officially got a lifetime ban.

The law of the US differs from the NFL law. When Vick is released he has the same rights as anyone but as it's being said nowadays and I agree that these hoodlums must learn that it's a honor to play in the NFL not someone's right. It's a moot point at best whatever the reply is to this comment. Any team that gives Vick a chance will have PETA and their pals on their case who advocate terrorism and murder to people like Micheal Vick. Hell, they had flyers printed up about how fantastic it was when Steve Irwin got killed so imagine how those nutjobs think about a guy who killed animals for sport???
