POINDEXTER TO MEET WITH INVESTIGATORS

Surry County prosecutor Gerald Poindexter says that he will meet with investigators on Monday to review evidence of dog fighting found last month at Michael Vick's property in Virginia. But there are still indications that Poindexter plans to look the other way as to any evidence linking Vick to the activities occurring on the land that, until last week, he owned.

Specifically, Poindexter says that Vick is being viewed as nothing more than the owner of the property, unless evidence reveals that he was involved in the dog-fighting activities. But Vick already has raised real questions about his involvement by staunchly denying that he ever went to the property, which was followed within days by the disclosure of multiple witnesses who can refute that claim. More recently, media reports have revealed more and more evidence linking Vick to dog fighting.

"I'm not going to be a party to a witch hunt," Poindexter told the Atlanta Journal-Constitution. "This [process] will not be driven by people who hate Michael Vick, love Michael Vick or people who love animals."

But is it a witch hunt to fully scrutinize Vick, without accepting at face value his self-serving version of the events? These dogs were found on Vick's property. The people who lived at the house were reportedly unemployed. Someone was funding this operation. Hello?

Thus, we're still concerned that Poindexter wants to cram hishead into the sand, and we hope that the "real" journalists out there are exploring Poindexter's potential motivation(s) for using his broad prosecutorial discretion to give Vick a pass.

Does Poindexter fear losing a re-election battle by taking on a local legend? Has Vick or those close to him supported Poindexter's past campaigns? Or is Poindexter simply too soft on dog fighting, as evidenced in 2000 when he requested that 33 confiscated dogs be released to an alleged dog fighter?

We don't know the particulars, but we know that there's an odor rising from Surry County. And it's something more than the stench of 66 malnourished and scarred dogs.

if jail time is involved does anyone really think no one here will crack and blow this case wide open ?

as someone else said on another thread, they wouldnt be surprised if other athletes and/or celebrities are involved

let's say one of the nobodies is going to jail for 5 years aver this, or he can give up a few big names and maybe do 1 year of easy time

Wow, interesting. I'd like to know if the alleged dog fighter was ever convicted of anything. Lots of people can allegedly do lots of things. Proof, ladies and gentlemen, proof. I've said it before and I'll say it again -- maybe Poindexter is just being extra cautious because of what happened when the prosecutor in the Duke lacrosse case charged in head first. We all know how that turned out.

Sheriff's department representatives and Surry County (Va.) prosecutor Gerald Poindexter will meet Monday to discuss the case involving allegations of dog-fighting on a property owned by Atlanta Falcons quarterback Michael Vick.

Kathy Strouse, the animal control coordinator for the city of Chesapeake, Va., told the Atlanta Journal-Constitution that the property contained a "blood-stained pit." Yahoo! Sports reported Wednesday that Strouse said she has talked to people who can place Vick "on that property" during fights.

Strouse also questioned why Poindexter had not issued an indictment. Dog-fighting is a felony in Virginia and 47 other states.

Chesapeake's animal control office was closed Wednesday and Strouse could not be reached.

"If she's on my team, I don't know why she's questioning my integrity," Poindexter said in a telephone interview. He said he put a call in to Strouse and that he had only a couple of prior conversations with her.

Proof?...I am just spit balling here...but that whole roll of dog cages etc in the back of the property was for what?...Starting the Michael Vick Humane Society?...I think they might have issues connecting certain people to it, but I am sure he has a case against someone, and it is Vick's property, which in one way or another makes him responsible for at least the properties used no?

Hmm, that makes me wonder. Everyone's focused on Vick so much, but has charges been filed against ANYONE in this case? You certainly think there would have to be enough to file charges against the cousin and some others. Vick may be difficult tying to the organization and funding of the case, that's all I'm saying. Hopefully when and if the prosecutor feels he has a case against Vick, then he'll pursue it.

My point exactly...I doubt you can totally nail Vick...but hey, forget the high profile name for now...if it's a crime, someone has to do time...what evidence do you have, who does it point to, and who can you get a conviction against?

Right, we agree on this. My "proof" comments were solely towards a case against Vick. I don't think he feel comfortable going against him, at least not until those video tapes emerge. More and more it seems like people are only concerned about nailing Vick... well, what about all the other people involved, whose involvement is already well know and proven? What's the status of the case there? That's what I'd like to know.

I hate the idea of a DA going after "big fish" to make a name for himself instead of serving the public interest...but in this case, as well as the Duke case...it seems more like its about the DA and what "type" of fish they rather fry. That is a skew on justice.

Since it's a sports forum, Vick...I dislike cruelty to animals, but its a Vick issue here...

Having defended Vick all of last year, the guy sure seems hell-bent on either doing stupid things or being associated with stupid people...I think a franchise QB would exercise better judgement...

I personally like the fact that the man gets 8 yards a carry on the ground, more than a lot QB's average per pass on the air...rare talent...the O should be built around who he is...

...now if he is cool or not, he should realize he is in part the face of the Falcons...and should adjust his associations to in part fit with the image a bit...

Come again?...I believe it was a fair comment...the guy is in the Media's eye for better or worse...you want to tell me that all the negative ink he is getting is on par for "the nice shy guy" you met?

As for my mom, she said a lot of things...one being..."don't be an idiot and hang with the wrong crowd"...maybe Michael's mom forget to run that one by him...you think?
