Question Better Off Without Vick

ok, im sure most here wont agree with me

but it seems the Falcons may just be better off if they didnt have Vick

no recent Super Bowl winner has had a QB of his style

he has had several years to prove himself and he has always fallen short

several different coaches have tried and none have been able to make it work

it seemed like a great idea at the time (are you listening Titans)

but it just isnt working

will it ever work, i dont think so

just how long do they wait and see ?

he is 26, so he could have another 10 years to play

do the Falcons play another 10 years just below greatness ?

First Daunte, now poor Vick who for all his faults is making his team win with his +100 yard rushinig days...

...and I did not know there was only one style of quarterbacking that would yield a Super Bowl winner...

And of course there hasn't been...the only QBs that ever ran close to how Vick runs where Bobby Douglas (for a very bad Bears team in 1972), and Randall Cunningham...so its not so much there can't be, as much as, few QBs can run that way.

Re: Better Off Without Vick

He's fun to watch though.

Sure he's not your average QB. He has a great arm, nearly NO touch and great legs. His problem is he has a gun for an arm but he always fires it to his receivers and most of the time, they can't corrale the ball.

It's going to take the PERFECT coach to settle Vick into a right offense. Is Mara that coach? We'll find out in the coming seasons.

In my opinion, he is the most fascinating QB to watch. You just wonder how in the world does he break through that defense!

Re: Better Off Without Vick

IMO Mora's first mistake was trying to make Vick play differently from his first time on the field. All he had to do was build the offense around his star QB and the rest would have been history. Mora looks like he's finally got it and is trying to do just that. You have a QB that has a running style that can win games, why try and reel him in with the WCO which btw is getting old. Sooner or later Vick will settle into a rhythm and stop running as much, look at Steve Young who would always take off running, he finally settled into a groove and when he did run it was for positive yards but he finally hooked up with Jerry Rice which for a time was the best duo in the NFL.

Re: Better Off Without Vick

Dumb question - where are Vick and the Falcons right now if Dan Reeves is still coaching the team. I seem to recall Vick enjoyed some success in the brief time he spent under Reeves, so I wonder if anyone thinks things would have developed differently had the former Broncos coach still been on the Atlanta sidelines.

Finally!...a voice of reason...thanks for jumping in...Sometimes I think all we got here is the "in the box mentality that feels the only way a QB can win is by dropping back 3-5 steps and throwing.

Re: Better Off Without Vick

Hey, there have been plenty of great running QBs in the past - Tarkenton (though he reportedly hates being called a scrambler), Cunningham, Young, McNabb early in his career... but the difference between them and Vick? They could still make smart decisions when throwing the football and they were more accurate that Vick has been. They were running QBs. Vick's got the running part down; it's the QB part that he's gotta work on.

Re: Better Off Without Vick

I don't know about the other QBs but as far as Steve Young is concern it took literally "years" for him to learn that he didn't always have to run and that you can win with your arm and brain. Steve Young was in a offense that had NO offensive skills, who's oline sucked to high heaven and all he had left was his legs, of course I'm talking about the cremesicle game of Tampa Bay, he ran for a few years in SF too until he saw that his offensive line and his "great" WRs could help him settle down and his running came to a managable halt. Vick will settle down, but Mora needs to play to his QB's talents not teach him to play a different game. McScab and Young made horrendous mistakes early when throwing the ball, Youngs INTS were way up early in his career and I think I remember seeing McScab throwing to some players of the opposite teams...lol

And some of them where not winning as much...

And ditto on Young, I remember him in Tampa Bay...not a Hall of Famer then...Staubach drove Landry crazy for a few years...on one play Roger the Dodger ran for over 20 seconds trying to get away from the Colts and Bubba Smith...Both developed into Super Bowl Champs.

Re: Better Off Without Vick

GDK, it just makes me sick when teams pick up these QBs from college because they like what they see then proceed to change them from they way they were. Are coaches that stupid that they feel the need to change everything a QB does in college when they hit the pro field?

Sweets not so much stupidity as either fear of wondering off the status quo for those who are not great coaches, or major ego for those who are the better ones..

you have to look to throw first then run if no one is open, unless an option is called

thats the tried and true way to win

how much does Brady run ?

Big Ben ?

Manning ?

Hasselback ?

My friend you live in the dark ages...you definitely color inside the lines...and stay inside that box don't you?...those guys "can't" run...so they don't...

Who's to say that you can't look for the run first?...look at the 1972 Dolphins...Bob Griese threw all of 7 passes total in a Championship game...

A QB job is not to pass or run...it is to lead and win...and if you can ran for 100 yards a game and make your halfback twice as dangerous in the process...and...and win as a result...why color inside the box then?...

That's okay, go live in your tried and true world...follow instead of lead...
