Eagles add Vick to 53-man roster; Baskett released

PHILADELPHIA (AP)—The Philadelphia Eagles have elevated Michael Vick(notes) to the team’s 53-man roster.

The Eagles released receiver Hank Baskett(notes) to make room for Vick, who is eligible to play on Sept. 27 against the Kansas City Chiefs. The team said on its Web site that Vick, who had been on the exempt list, will begin practicing with the team on Wednesday, though he cannot play in Sunday’s home opener against the New Orleans Saints.

Baskett was one of seven receivers the Eagles carried on their 53-man roster through Week 1. He became expendable after Philadelphia selected Jeremy Maclin(notes) in the first round of April’s draft and added Brandon Gibson(notes) in the sixth round.



Vick was suspended for the first two regular-season games as the final league penalty for his role in running a dogfighting ring.

I'm just glad the Falcons never considered bringing Vick back. We have a much better QB with Matt Ryan than Vick ever was, because Matt is a team player, and becoming a team leader who's well liked by all his teammates. But I will say one thing for Vick, he'll probably do ok in the wildcat offense, if that's how the Eagles choose to use him.

He may become the team leader he never was in Atlanta, like maybe he has learned a thing or two. Hope so.
Yeah, Atlanta is better off where they are now. It would never have worked to bring Vick back and it is better for Vick also.
