There was an optimistic buzz among fans and players Saturday at Braves FanFest, before any of them knew the team agreed to terms on a trade for veteran Oakland center fielder Mark Kotsay.
The Braves and Athletics agreed to a deal to bring Kotsay to Atlanta and send rookie reliever Joey Devine to Oakland, according to a person familiar with negotiations. The person also said the A's would pay all but about $2 million of Kotsay's $7.35 million salary in 2008, provided Kotsay and his balky back pass inspection."Quality major leaguer," Braves third baseman Chipper Jones said of Kotsay. "He's gonna put up quality at-bats and play a solid center field — not flashy like Andruw [Jones], but solid."
Kotsay, 32, played only 56 games in 2007 after back surgery, and must pass a physical in Atlanta before the deal is official. He isn't expected to be examined by Braves doctors until Monday.
The California native told the Journal-Constitution on Friday that he was healthy and excited about possibly playing for manager Bobby Cox and the Braves. "It's a great opportunity," Kotsay said.
