It may have been cold and gray in Duluth on Thursday, but the boys of summer at Bunten Road Park were not discouraged.

The senior McCann, who runs the Windward Baseball Academy in Alpharetta, logged 18 years coaching college baseball — including seven at the University of Georgia and six at Marshall University. He'd done summer camps at Bunten Road before, he said, but this was the first one he'd done over the holiday break.
With a roster of other pros, including son Brad McCann of the Kansas City Royals and Al Goetz, owner of the Chipper Jones Baseball Academy in Duluth, he doled out individualized coaching to about 42 baseball players ages 7 to 17. The players, or their families, had paid between $100 and $150 for the camp.
"Camp has two goals," Howie McCann said. "Learn something, and have fun. Baseball is a fun game. We should keep it fun."
