Braves giving up on Wickman

The Braves designated reliever Bob Wickman for assignment on Friday after the former closer allowed a game-winning home run in the 12th inning at Cincinnati. Wickman has 10 days to be traded or placed on waivers.

Re: Braves giving up on Wickman

Well, this was incredibly stupid. If he's not getting the job done as a closer, demote him to setup man. Or seventh inning guy. Why, in the name of all that is reasonable, was he DFA'd?

Wickman's season line:

43 IP, 20 SV, 35 K's, 3.92 ERA

Ok, maybe it isn't Mariano Rivera-esk, but it's a lot better then most of the relievers on the team! I know a ton of teams will be eager to sign him, not necessarily as a closer, but as a decent middle reliever or setup man.

Re: Braves giving up on Wickman

Shame - it would've been better the place the guy on waivers and deal him.

He can still pitch in the majors, no doubt in my mind. And some bullpen out there could use him.

You're totally right. Someone is going to trade for him. Maybe the Yankees???? Straight up, Sean Henn for him.

Re: Braves giving up on Wickman

I think it was a good idea to get rid of Bob Wickman. It was bound to happen sometime. IMO, Octavio Dotel should take over as closer now. Once he is un-injured. Maybe they should also give another try to Devine.

Welcome to GoTeamsGo, cjschev, and thanks for joining us!

I heard on ESPN that he was turning into a clubhouse cancer, complaining about being used in non-save situations. If so, then the move makes sense.

Re: Braves giving up on Wickman

Thanks! Yeah, I heard that too. But what team will want so sign him?

I wonder if they'll send him down to the minors to join Julio Franco.

Re: Braves giving up on Wickman

There had been rumors about Arizona possibly going after him, but it looks like that's dead. The Phillies have reportedly asked about Wickman as well, but according to Yahoo! Sports, sources say that the two teams couldn't work out a deal. So for now, it looks like the wannabe closer's sitting in limbo.
