| Chipper breaks Braves HR record Chipper Jones hit a pair of home runs last night, breaking Dale Murphy's record and becoming the Atlanta Braves all-time home run leader. I'm assuming this record discounts the franchise's Milwaukee days and is a Georgia-only achievement. Jones now has 372 career home runs 6,622 at-bats, or 400 fewer than Murphy needed to set his mark. So, I've gotta ask - is Chipper Hall of Fame worthy?

| Re: Chipper breaks Braves HR record Dale Murphy .265 career average; 2,111 hits; 1,197 runs; 350 doubles; 39 triples; 398 HR; 1,266 RBI; 161 steals; .346 OPB; 121 OPS+ Chipper Jones .306 career average; 2,053 hits; 1,253 runs; 407 doubles; 32 triples; 374 HR; 1,253 RBI; 134 syeals; .403 OPB; 143 OPS+ Given how similar their numbers are, and that Murph played in less of a hitters' era, I'd have to give him the nod over Chipper, too. But there's a personal bias there - Murphy was one of my favorites. Based on pure numbers though, in two seasons, as long as he keeps his BA and OPB up, Jones will pass Murphy in just about ever pure hitting statistic. According to Baseball-Reference.com, Chippers stats through age 34 are comparable to those of HOFers Duke Snider, Mike Schmidt and Reggie Jackson. |
