Cool Braves: Andruw Jones or Dale Murphy?

Which of these two great Braves outfielders would you have traded for, Andruw Jones or Dale Murphy? Both Power hitters that good run, and field equally well...one a part of some great Braves team, and one who suffered on some really awful ones.

Oh, man, that's not fair, Gotham. Both of them were great players, and you really couldn't lose with either one. I guess if pushed I'd take Jones because he has more power at the plate and is a slightly better fielder.

Yeah can't go wrong with either one, but I am not buying that Jones has more power, Murphy was hitting 36 and 37 homers a season when that was the high marks in the NL...Jones is hitting 36-50 when a lot of players are also hitting 40-50...I would say the power is even...though Jones has mroe flair out in the field.

Gotham is right about comparing numbers from different eras. Graig Nettles won the AL HR title in 1976 with 32! Today he'd have 45-50. Just watching both players play, I would take Jones. His fielding is so awesome and you don't lose much offensively.

Yeah Pundit, I miss the days when 20 Homers meant you were a bonafide power hitter...it was a thrill to see George Foster get past 50 in 1977...then you know somethings up when Brady Anderson comes along and sets an Oriole record!...I mean Boog Powell and Frank Robinson get past up by freakin Brady Anderson!...amazing!

Re: Braves: Andruw Jones or Dale Murphy?

Jones led the league in homers last year, did he not? How many times did Murph Dog ever lead the league in home runs? I don't actually know for sure, but offhand I can't remeber any years in which he did. They're close, though, that's for sure.

Re: Braves: Andruw Jones or Dale Murphy?

Well, I stand corrected. Looks like they're about equal in all phases of the game. And with all things being equaly, I'd change my vote and go with Murphy. He was one of my favorites, and I loved watching him play. But cut me some slack, Gotham... I was too young at the time to crunch the numbers

Re: Braves: Andruw Jones or Dale Murphy?

Okay, let's crunch some data here, shall we?

Career Batting Average
Jones - .267 | Murphy - .265 | Edge: JONES

Career OBP
Jones - .342 | Murphy - .346 | Edge: MURPHY

Average HRs Per 162 Games
Jones - 31 | Murphy - 30 | Edge: JONES

Gold Gloves
Jones - 8 | Murphy - 5 | Edge: JONES

MVP Awards
Jones - 0 | Murphy - 2 | Edge: MURPHY

Silver Slugger Awards
Jones - 1 | Murphy - 4 | Edge: MURPHY

Years Leading League in HRs
Jones - 1 | Murphy - 2 | Edge: MURPHY

Years Leading League in RBIs
Jones - 1 | Murphy - 2 | Edge: MURPHY

OVERALL WINNER: MURPHY 5-3
So ultimately, it looks like Murph Dog edges out Jones. Agree?

Re: Braves: Andruw Jones or Dale Murphy?

Well, I imagine there were some other numbers that could be crunched - OPS, Ks per AB, errors per season and the like. But this is serviceable. Jones is the better fielder, Murphy's the better hitter and better overall player, but it IS close.
