John Smoltz will have the opportunity to realize his dream of playing his entire Major League career with the Braves.
Late Thursday evening, the Braves announced that they had signed Smoltz to a contract extension that could keep him in Atlanta through the end of the 2010 season. Financial details have yet to be confirmed.
Smoltz, who could have become a free agent after this season, will have a guaranteed contract for the 2008 season. There will be a vesting option for 2009, and a club option for 2010.Smoltz has established himself as one of the game's greatest pitchers. He owns a Major League-record 15 career postseason wins and joins Hall of Famer Dennis Eckersley as the only pitchers to have registered both 150 wins and 150 saves in their career.
While winning two of his first four starts this season, Smoltz has moved within five wins from the 200-win milestone. He has a 3.28 career ERA and his 2,800 strikeouts place him 18th on the all-time list.
