Arizona Softball

The Arizona Wildcats have made the College World Series of Softball for the 19th time in the last 20 years. They enter as the #1 seed as well as defending champs. If they can pull off the repeat it would be their 8th title in 20 years. Just a little exposure for a softball empire that may go unnoticed in other parts of the nation.

Cool, thanks for the heads-up there, desertrat. Always love hearing stories of unsung dynasties.

So has the same coach been there throughout this two decade run? And who do they open CWS play against?

The coach for Arizona is Mike Candrea, who also coaches the US National team. He has been here for the entire run of excellence. Arizona opens against Baylor on thursday evening. A bit of itony here, the star player for Baylor is Ashley Monceaux (may be mispelled). Ashely is a Tucson native from Flowing Wells HS and was a classmate of mine at Pima College here in Tucson in 2004. She was the star player on that Pima College team that won the NJCAA National title but opted to attend school out of state instead of playing for her hometown school. Ashley pitches and is also a terror at the plate. I personally want to see her play well but still want Arizona to win.

On the other side of the bracket, Washington beat Depaul 3-1 with a no-hitter from Husky pitcher Danielle Lawrie. Northwestern beat Arizona State 2-0 and will face Washington tomorrow. Depaul will face Arizona State in an elimination game tomorrow.

Re: Arizona Softball

Arizona will take on Tennessee in the College Softball World Series Final. Arizona had to win two games against Pac10 rival Washington today and they did just that with a 2-0 win early followed by an 8-1 win later. This marks the 21st consecutive year that one of either Arizona or UCLA is in the final with 17 titles between them in the 25 years of the tournament's existence.

Re: Arizona Softball

Tennesse handled Arizona in game 1 3-0. Game two was a pitcher's duel between Monica Abbott of Tennesse and Taryne Mowatt of Arizona. Scoreless through 9 innings, Arizona finally broke through for a run when local girl Adrienne Acton drove in another local girl, Danielle Rodriguez for the winning run. The series is tied up with the deciding game to be played wednsday evening at 5PM Tucson time.
