Wildcats Struggle but Win 19-6 over Central Michigan

UA tops Central Michigan in opener

Associated Press
Arizona's Vuna Tuihalamka ( recovers a loose ball over his teammate Jordan McConnell (21), while Central Michgan's Cody Wilson (11) attempts to breakup the play with Kilo Poblah (10) on the ground during the first half.

TUCSON- Nic Grigsby ran for 118 yards and a touchdown, Alex Zendejas Jr. matched a school record with four field goals and Arizona defeated Central Michigan 19-6 on Saturday night in a game delayed 43 minutes by lightning.

Ending weeks of mystery over Willie Tuitama's successor, Arizona coach Mike Stoops started Matt Scott at quarterback ahead of fellow sophomore Nick Foles.

After a slow start, Scott completed 19-of-30 passes for 202 yards, and he was intercepted once. Scott also rushed for 83 yards on nine carries.
Scott may improve with seasoning. But with Arizona's offense sputtering, the Wildcats needed their defense to take control, and it did.

The Wildcats neutralized Central Michigan senior quarterback Dan LeFevour. He ran for a touchdown but finished with 108 passing yards, his third-fewest in 40 career games.

Re: Wildcats Struggle but Win 16-9 over Central Michigan

I apologize on this game summary, Wildcats actually beat Central Michigan 19-6 not 16-9. Sorry about this everybody, I was tired and it was late that night.

I edited it so it looks correct now.

It's not often a team racks up 448 yards of offense and only has 19 points to show for it. Arizona broke in a new QB and is also missing preseason all-american TE Rob Gronkowski who has been out with a lower back injury.

Ok Desert Rat, glad to see you over here. So you think the struggle with Central Michigan is an abberation? Do you think the Wildcats can be really good this year? In a few sentences...tell me why? I personally think the Wildcats and WSU Cougars will be fighting for last place in the PAC 10. Myabe you can tell us why this won't happen???

It's called defense! CMU has an explosive offense, they score a lot of points and have a record breaking QB....but they were snuffed out by Arizona. I figure Arizona will finish somewhere around 6th in the Pac 10 mainly becuase of the way the schedule is set up. Every one of their toughest opponents is on the road this year.

Having attended some practices and scrimmages over the summer, I personally don't know why Matt Scott is starting over Nick Foles at QB. Scott is the better runner but he cannot throw a decent pass downfield. Foles has a nice touch on his passes but isn't very mobile. Expect to see both QBs get action throughout the year.

Re: Wildcats Struggle but Win 19-6 over Central Michigan

It sure sounded like from reading Mike Stoops was having trouble picking a QB just before opening game. Sounds like you have the inside scoop being you attended some practices.

I just think the PAC 10 overall is going to be the best it has been in years. Heck, even the Washington Huskies who didn't win a game last year, looks tough. See if Stoops can get the offense rolling before their first tough test @ Iowa. Wildcats have a great OC from Texas Tech.

I'll take a great defense over a great offense anytime, but in the PAC 10 you have to score points to win I am sure you realize.

Re: Wildcats Struggle but Win 19-6 over Central Michigan

With Central Michigan knocking off Michigan State 29-27 today, this win looks a little better for Arizona.
