Johnson to pitch Monday

Randy Johnson will make his spring debut with the Arizona Diamondbacks today.

How do you think he'll perform?

I'll fall back on my theory that there becomes a time when you are just to old to perform at a high enough level. The man is now 44 years old. I would hope that the "Unit" could put up some numbers but I fear that the ones he puts up aren't the type that would get him into Cooperstown.

Re: Johnson to pitch Monday

According to the Arizona Republic, he played well: "He threw 33 pitches against the Colorado Rockies, one of which was sent screaming over the left-field fence at Hi Corbett Field for a three-run homer. But more important, none of the pitches caused him any discomfort, and that alone would have been reason for relief for the Diamondbacks... Add to that the fact that he showed flashes of effectiveness - glimpses of the pitcher who, when healthy, dominated during a six-start stretch last season - and it's easy to see why there was plenty of optimism surrounding his short outing."

Unit's outing strong despite HR

I have the feeling Johnson just wants 16 more wins to get to 300. After that, I bet he hangs it up.

Re: Johnson to pitch Monday

ya know, my dad has always been a huge fan of randy. He's constantly commented in his favour but why? His ERA is always through the roof and consistency has always proved problematic with him. He's far from dependable. He's a good pitcher and i stress the word good. The only reason that he is popular and noticed is because he is almost 7 feet tall, a lefty, and he throws amazing heat. so what. I'd take roy halladay anyday.

Most likely. But will he get 16 wins this year? I mean, that's not a given.

Well, it's like you said... he's a big lefty who throws amazing heat. In his prime, because of the velocity and angle of his pitches, he was damn near unhittable. Nowadays he seems like nothing special, but anyone who can throw hard enough to make a seagull explode is going to be highly sought after.
