Randy Johnson out for year

According to the Associated Press, "Randy Johnson will have season-ending back surgery and intends to be back for the Arizona Diamondbacks at spring training next year... It marks the second year in a row that the Big Unit will have an operation on his troublesome back. It will be the third back operation of his career." Johnson, 43, says he has no intention of retiring. I'm skeptical, though. Will he ever be able to pitch effectively again? Should he just hang 'em up?

It's time...why cripple yourself for life?...I am sure at his height he can threw fastballs until he is 60...but lets get real...it's time.

I agree with both of you. The thing I can't figure out is, why? Why does he want to keep pushing himself to play when he's clearly physically unable to do so? The Big Unit's got nothing left to prove. He was one of the most dominating presences ever to step onto the mound. Why keep at it and risk ruining your legacy?

Yes but nothing overly positive ... just tons of money.

Your key word there was "SOME". Not a lot, not several, not all ... just some. Well heckster ... I could outperform some !!!

I feel he is just trying to get to 300 wins. He wants to assure his spot in the HOF. I don't think he has enough left to get them.

Re: Randy Johnson out for year

I think there is a bigger picture for a team than just laying claim to a HOF'er. He will be in the rotation taking up a spot that could provide more needed wins to the team. Realistically it is more important to win today than to have a HOF'er 5 years down the road.

Yep, LSC, that's it in a nutshell. Even if Johnson wants to come back, the D-Backs would be foolish to bring him back in 2008.
