Big Unit injured

According to the Associated Press, "Randy Johnson was placed on the 15-day disabled list by the Arizona Diamondbacks on Friday night with muscle tightness... It is the second time this season the 43-year-old Johnson has been on the disabled list. He started the year on the DL while recovering from offseason back surgery... He will be replaced on the roster by right-hander Enrique Gonzalez."

He reportedly felt tightness in his buttocks, of all places. Go figure.

This story is begging for some cute quips. I'm a strong believer that 43 is just to old. Yes there are exceptions but they are far and few between. What you get versus what you spend just doesn't equal out.

You mean like, "Randy Johnson's latest injury is a serious pain in the arse". Something like that?

In all seriousness, though, I agree with you. Obviously his body's failing him. He's thrown too hard for too long, and now he's getting too old to be a reliable hurler on a regular basis. Yes, he's shown flashes of brilliance, but clearly the years have taken their toll.

Yep ... that is precisely what I mean. Flashes of brilliance also include periods of dole drums. You just cannot beat up your body for 20 years and expect it to perform at an acceptable level at this point. Go out on top of the ladder while you can.

Roger will be next in line for this same thread.

Roger's body is different, his pitching power comes from his legs, and Randy's from his incredible height...Randy by all rights should break down faster...Roger like Nolan or Tom Seaver is built to go longer...however both are cars with more miles than my own car...which is saying a lot...I fully expect to have my car die by the side of the road, never to be resurrected...

Does that mean this was your last post ???

Gotcha on how some can survive the old age syndrome. My point is and always has been that for the most part at age 43 they should be sitting at home wondering if the grass needs to ne cut.

...though you are not given enough credit to growing advances in sports training, medicine etc...

It use to be basektball players played about 13 seasons and 1,000 or so games in the era of Wilt, West, and the Big O...then players started to push pass that...15-18 years is possible for a basektball player now...etc...

maybe 43 is not so unheard of any more...Bonds is still swinging (steroids aided?...yeah...but that doesn't help a batting average) Maddux, Clemens and Johnson still pitching...Rickey Henderson, bless his aging heart, still thinks he can play...

Maybe 43 is the new 38?...

As long as they don't change the age at which I can draw social security then I guess I will go along with the 38/43 idea. In rethinking my view I would agree that over time we have (some of us anyway) made strides in our own personal health. Although not aged enough for S.S. I feel above average healthwise for my age so I guess those who work at it for a living will have a longer career.

The bad part is that although I am retired I will no longer be able to be retired since I am now to young. There just isn't any justice, except for David.

The AP is reporting that Johnson has a herniated disk in his back and will be out indefinitely. So is he done for good?

Re: Big Unit injured

I again question why a 43 year old tries to keep playing when percentages are against you and most stats prove it.

How long before Rogo falls into the same scenario ???

Re: Big Unit injured

ESPN this morning is reporting that Johnson has gone on the DL - again - because of back problems.

Seriously, Randy, if you're out there. Just hang 'em up already, dude. Call it a career, because there's no doubt in anyone's mind that you're done.
