DBack Notes from Ken Rosenthal

These two tidbits are from his latest column on FOX Sports, they have to do with the Arizona Diamondbacks.

"# The Diamondbacks want to add a top-of-the-rotation type to complement right-handers Brandon Webb and Livan Hernandez, but they're unlikely to be the high bidder for a free agent such as Schmidt. The team will pay $13.3 million in 2007 to two players no longer with the club, right-hander Russ Ortiz and outfielder Shawn Green. That figure represents approximately 20 percent of the D-Backs' projected payroll ...

# Free-agent left fielder Luis Gonzalez wants to stay in the NL West to take vengeance on the Diamondbacks, and it looks like he's going to get his chance. Both the Dodgers and Giants are showing significant interest in Gonzalez, who finished second in the NL with 52 doubles last season at age 39 ..."

The first one, the fact that they will be paying over $13 million to players not on their team and it's 20% of their whole payroll....wow.

It's going to be fun watching Luis Gonzalez sign with a competitor and go to BankOneBallpark (do they still call it that?) and jack some home runs against the team he helped lead to a Championship.

Re: DBack Notes from Ken Rosenthal

Luis Gonzalez isn't as good as he was back in 2001.

Note: He has those steroid rumors buzzing around the media.

Can they afford Jason Schmidt's asking price?

They must not have that much money lying around in their budget.

Re: DBack Notes from Ken Rosenthal

Gonzalez does have that steroid buzz hanging over him but he's so well liked universally in baseball and the media that it probably won't effect him too much. He's a good hitter overall but he's got no power anymore.

He better find a way to sneak some steroids then.
