| Cash for Kurt As Charley Casserly of CBS points out, Arizona’s playoff win on Saturday will result in an additional $1.5 million in 2008 compensation for Cardinals quarterback Kurt Warner. Based on incentive clauses reported by Adam Schefter of NFLN in November, we think that the number actually is only $1 million for the Saturday victory. But Warner has earned other incentives. And he could still make even more. Per Schefter, Warner became eligible for up to five specific regular-season incentives by playing in 70 percent of the snaps on offense, and then by: (1) generating a passer rating over 90; (2) finishing in the top ten in passing yards; (3) finishing in the top ten in touchdown passes; (4) finishing in the top ten in yards per pass; and (5) chalking up ten wins. For each of those five, he could earn $500,000; however, his total take under those five categories was capped at $1.5 million. Since Warner had a passer rating of 96.9, finished second in passing yardage, and had the third most touchdown passes, he pocketed the $1.5 million. For the postseason, Schefter reported that Warner would earn $500,000 for making the wild-card round. Advancing to the divisional round pushed the number to $1 million. The next level (conference championship) would escalate the payment to $1.5 million. A Super Bowl appearance pushes the number to $2 million. Winning the title translates to a total of $3 million. As Schefter reported in November, however, Warner is capped at $4 million in total incentives. With $2.5 million already in his pocket, he could cap out at the full $4 million only by winning the Super Bowl. Even more money could be waiting for Warner in 2009, given that the two-time league MVP is due to be a free agent. The franchise tag probably isn’t an option, since it would (by our calculations) result in a one-year guaranteed payment of $14.8 million. Our guess is that Warner thinks his value is greater than it really is, which might force the Cardinals to let him hit the market in order to realize that no one will meet his demands. That said, we don’t rule out the possibility of a team flush with cap space (e.g., Tampa) and in need of a quarterback (e.g., Tampa) forking over a ton of money to Warner on a short-term deal. The question is whether Warner is willing to leave a system in which he has the best three wideouts in the league, and whether he means it when he says he intends to retire as a Cardinal. ProFootballTalk.com - MORE CASH FOR KURT I am looking at the part where it says that Kurt thinks his value is greater than it is in reality. Hey Tampa, I think this is right up your alley as the post suggests.
