Larry Fitzgerald contract cripples Cardinals

The Arizona Cardinals are in a mess heading into the NFL free agency period, and they have no one to blame but themselves.

Cardinals wide receiver Larry Fitzgerald is owed a base salary of $16.5 million for the 2008 season, thanks to the incentive-laden rookie deal that the Cardinals agreed to when they made him the third pick in the 2004 NFL draft. As a base salary, the entire contract will count against the team's 2008 salary cap, which means about 15% of the cap is tied into one player.

Cardinals have to be one of the dumbest franchise in the NFL...never a season it seems that they do not shoot themselves in the foot.

Is it too early to that they need to trade away their players and rebuild yet again. They need to higher somebody that understands how to run a franchise.

Agreed. Not to say Fitzgerald isn't a good player, but NO one player is worth 15% of your total team salary!

That is all I am saying...how do you put foward a contract that has the possibility of sinking your whole team?...I mean how is that managing a team?

Complete and total lack of forethought. Whoever penned the deal must've said, "He'll never achieve all these things. Trust me!"

How fast do you think that guy was fired when they saw what it was going to cost them?

Well, that worked on say a Ricky Williams type deal...but still he was the hottest receiver in the draft that year...so you got to think...maybe...maybe he can...

I mean, I manage multi-million dollar projects for a living...and I am always trying to mitigate risk and figure out worst case scenerios to avoid. hey, maybe I could be the Cards GM...
