| Wisenhunt To Call Plays In three seasons as Pittsburgh's offensive coordinator, Ken Whisenhunt earned a reputation as a creative, successful play-caller. It is a role he will continue now that he is head coach of the Cardinals, even though his responsibilities are much broader than the call sheet in front of him. Whisenhunt enjoys the challenge of calling plays. He loves the preparation in the week leading up to the game and the excitement of making calls on game days. "I get an adrenaline rush from calling it," he said. The job will be more difficult now. In addition to play calls, Whisenhunt has to be concerned with all areas of the game, from time management to his defense's performance to the kicking game. "Just from having called the plays, I know how wrapped up I get just from being so focused on that," he said. "There's going to be other things involved now. That transition for me is something I'll have to get adjusted to. I'll have to rely on other guys on the staff. That's all part of having a good staff." Many NFL head coaches call their own plays, and it seems to be a growing trend among the new hires in the league. The Falcons' Bobby Petrino, the Raiders' Lane Kiffin and the Dolphins' Cam Cameron are new head coaches who plan to call their own shots. Norv Turner, new coach of the Chargers, calls his own plays and does not view it as a big deal. "Everyone talks about it like it's unusual," he said this spring at the owners meetings in Phoenix. "But the guys I grew up with as a young coach looking at, that's what guys did, whether it be Joe Gibbs, whether it be Bill Walsh, whether it be Tom Landry. "Obviously there are decisions made on game day, but there are a lot of decisions that are made Wednesday, Thursday, Friday as you're preparing for a team. There are a lot of decisions made way before the game ever starts." Whisenhunt plans to rely heavily on assistant head coach/offensive line coach Russ Grimm and offensive coordinator Todd Haley. Whisenhunt's long-range plan is to eventually hand over the play calling to Haley. Whisenhunt said he is indebted to former Steelers coach Bill Cowher, who promoted Whisenhunt to offensive coordinator and allowed him to call plays. He would like to do the same for someone on his staff. When that will happen, Whisenhunt is not sure. Coach keeps plate full |
