PHOENIX -- Russ Grimm was hired as the Arizona Cardinals' assistant head coach and offensive line coach Tuesday, two weeks after he interviewed for the head coaching position.

The 47-year-old Grimm will be charged with improving the Cardinals' offensive line, which drew heavy criticism during the team's 5-11 season.

Grimm worked as an assistant with the Steelers the last six seasons. He spent the previous 19 years with the Washington Redskins -- as an all-pro guard for 11 seasons (1981-91) and then as an assistant coach for eight (1992-2000).

Grimm is a finalist for the Pro Football Hall of Fame. He said he's not anxious about the Feb. 3 vote in Miami.

"I tend to concentrate on the things I have control over," Grimm said. "Something like that is exciting, but it's something that's out of my hands."

14 years as an assistant coach........has to make you wonder why he hasnt landed a head coaching job yet

maybe he just isnt cut out for it

i wish him all the luck in Arizona.......if he can shore up the O-line they could be a really good team

If Grimm can get that Cardinals line playing better next year, then that offense will be dynamic. I am a firm believer that the Cardinals need to find a way to land Joe Thomas in the draft as that shores up two positions along the line. Right now, Leonard Davis is their left tackle. By drafting Joe Thomas, you have the flexibility to move Leonard Davis to guard, where he is better suited as a road-grader, thus knocking out two needs with one stone.

Great turn of events for the Cardinals. You have to imagine the offensive line will improve with better coaching.

As Notorious pointed out, if they get Joe Thomas in the draft, Leinart should be protected for over a decade.

Grimm's a great hire, though I'm surprised he was named just the offensive line coach and not the offensive coordinator. But anyway, he's arguably the best line coach in the league right now, so if anyone can get that bunch of bums in Arizona playing better, it's him. Like C.L.E. says, this line is all that's keeping the Cardinals offense from being something really special.
