ANAHEIM, Calif. – The Anaheim Ducks announced today that the National Hockey League (NHL) club has re-signed defenseman Shane O’Brien to a one-year contract. Per club policy, no financial terms of the deal were disclosed.

O’Brien, 22 (8/9/83), spent the 2005-06 season with the Portland Pirates, Anaheim’s primary development affiliate in the American Hockey League (AHL). He led all AHL defensemen in playoff scoring with 6-16=22 points, while also leading the league in penalty minutes (81) in the post-season.

The Port Hope, Ontario native scored 8-33=41 points with 287 penalty minutes (PIM) in 77 regular season games, leading all Pirate defensemen in points and ranking third overall in assists. He also ranked sixth in the AHL in penalty minutes and tied-for-14th in points among defensemen. The 6-2, 237-pound blueliner set season-highs in goals, assists and points.

In three seasons in the AHL, O’Brien has collected 15-61=76 points with 769 PIM in 214 regular season games, while increasing his point production each season. In 43 postseason contests, he has recorded 7-21=28 points with 168 PIM.

O’Brien was drafted by Anaheim in the eighth round (250th overall) of the 2003 NHL Entry Draft.
