Selanne returns

He'd rather play than retire, and he wants to play with the Ducks.
He's signed a one year contract and has practiced with the team already.
He's 37.
I'm not sure what i think about this kind of thing - him and niedermayer sitting around deciding whether or not they want to play, joining halfway through the season. I'm sure duck fans are happy, but I think there should be a cutoff time so princess-like players don't sit and take so long to decide -and the cutoff time should be before Christmas at least.

Re: Selanne returns

He's pulling a Roger Clemens here, being a hired gun for the second half of the season. He'll definitely help them down the stretch I'm sure, and as long as he contributes, I can't see the fans having a problem with it.

Re: Selanne returns

No, not them -although when they were struggling they must have thought, come on - come back already.
These guys aren't coming back for the Ducks. they are coming back for themselves.

Re: Selanne returns

so on his first game back, the Ducks beat the Islanders and end a six game losing streak and selanne gets an assist. The other guy who decided to wait to come back until he was comfortable, Niedermayer, scored a goal.
Islanders are injury ridden which doesn't make up for handing the ducks 6 power plays (ducks capitalized on one). Ducks gave up one power play.
It's a shutout for Giguere, his 3rd this season and his second straight (ducks lost in the SO to St. Louis on Friday).
This was suggested by a friend of mine - Selanne and niedermayer waited to come back 56 games (Selanne, anyway) because they just didn't want to bother with the first half of the season. they are both older players, tired somewhat, they've won cups now, the first part of the season is boring, so if they can wait and then come back in Feb, why not?
I buy that - which makes me say even more - put a deadline on returning and make it before Christmas. This is the NHL, not some pickup game you can say, hey count me in - whenever you like.

Re: Selanne returns

Yeah, blue, but unfortunately it's happening more and more - and not just in sports, but across the boards. Teams won't say no to these guys if they think they can be of service come playoff time. It stinks, the proliferation of part time players, but the only ones who can put a stop to it are the owners, and they won't.
