| Alabama's big offensive line faces test against Utah's tiny defensive line Nick Saban's eyes have deceived him. When the Alabama coach watches film and focuses on Utah's defensive line, he reaches one conclusion. "They don't look so small to me," he said. They are. In the Allstate Sugar Bowl on Jan. 2, the Crimson Tide's massive offensive line faces a Utes front four that is smaller than that of any other UA opponent. By far. But for the second-stingiest unit in the Mountain West (allowing 17.2 points), much of the credit goes to a defensive line that disrupts with speed instead of girth. "They're a little undersized compared to (Southeastern Conference) lines," said Alabama right tackle Drew Davis, a 6-foot-7, 300-pounder. "What they lack (they make up for by being) very quick." Perhaps that's what Saban means. Not that they aren't small, but that they don't play small. "They play with power, they come out of their hips well, and they don't play soft on the line of scrimmage," Saban said. "They play an eight-man front most of the time on run downs and are very disciplined in terms of their gap control. Defensively, their front is probably as good as anybody we've played." Alabama's offensive line made a national name for itself by helping Glen Coffee become the SEC's second-most productive rusher and helping the offense control the ball for an average of 32 minutes, 32 seconds. Led by two All-Americans, left tackle Andre Smith and center Antoine Caldwell, UA mauled opponents early and wore them down late. The challenges were not lost on Utah coach Kyle Whittingham. Story

| Re: Alabama's big offensive line faces test against Utah's tiny defensive line Whatever the situation may be, and I know you are right when you say this is a no win situation for the Tide, we must score a lot of points on them. It seems a lot of points will get you noticed even if you play NOBODY, doesn't it? |
