TUSCALOOSA -- Alabama second-string quarterback
Greg McElroy will not inherit the starting spot from senior
John Parker Wilson without a fight.
Crimson Tide coach
Nick Saban said Monday that he will not name a 2009 starter without first opening up the race. That presumably includes McElroy's fellow backups like current true freshman
Star Jackson and walk-on
Thomas Darrah as well as expected February signee
AJ McCarron out of St. Paul's.
"We will have competition for the position next year," Saban said. "(McElroy) has the most experience right now, but we're certainly going to let everybody compete for it and make a decision about who can do the best job of helping us win."
Jackson, a touted signee from Florida, redshirted this season.
