Alabama will open up QB competition next season

TUSCALOOSA -- Alabama second-string quarterback Greg McElroy will not inherit the starting spot from senior John Parker Wilson without a fight.
Crimson Tide coach Nick Saban said Monday that he will not name a 2009 starter without first opening up the race. That presumably includes McElroy's fellow backups like current true freshman Star Jackson and walk-on Thomas Darrah as well as expected February signee AJ McCarron out of St. Paul's.
"We will have competition for the position next year," Saban said. "(McElroy) has the most experience right now, but we're certainly going to let everybody compete for it and make a decision about who can do the best job of helping us win."

Jackson, a touted signee from Florida, redshirted this season.

Re: Alabama will open up QB competition next season

From what little I've seen of McElroy he appears to be good, but I'm glad coach Saban is giving the other QBs a chance for the starter position.

I know some coaches have used two QBs. Maybe this will be a possibility as well. One could be good in some circumstance where another could be better at something else.

The job should definitely go to the best man regardless of his seniority. What we want is another winning team!

The very nature of an athlete is to be fiercely competitive. This will work in our favor this spring. May the best man win! We will only profit!
