Wilson shines in Alabama scrimmage

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. (AP) -- John Parker Wilson had a big day in Alabama's first preseason scrimmage, passing for 309 yards and two touchdowns. Wilson completed 17 of 30 passes but was intercepted twice in the Crimson Tide's scrimmage Saturday at Bryant-Denny Stadium. He had several big-play hookups.Mike McCoy led the receivers with 109 yards on three catches with a touchdown.

Much talked about freshman Julio Jones caught two passes for 59 yards and also scored. Redshirt freshman Marquis Maze gained 74 yards on two receptions. "I thought we had a good first scrimmage today," coach Nick Saban said. "We made some really good plays out there today. Mike McCoy made two or three really big plays. He had some big catches. He caught the ball and ran with it and scored. Julio made a couple of big plays and scored."

Re: Wilson shines in Alabama scrimmage

You guys have got to like what you're seeing out of the passing game on the whole. The young receivers really sound like they're stepping it up, and Jones is a player I'm really looking forward to seeing in real game action, since I've heard so much about him. The only issue I can see is Wilson's accuracy. 17-for-30 in a scrimmage isn't great.

Lefty

I have to agree with you, JPW isn't nearly as sharp as he should be. His timing isn't the greatest and he has a tendancy to panic rather than reading through the progression to find the open man he forces stuff to Julio. That may be a HUGE problem. This is a team sport and he needs more than one reciever to throw too. This is very much like the Carolina Panthers with Steve Smith. Delhomme like to throw to him ALL the time even if he isn't open. Notice the Panthers haven't been competitive either have they? I want to see JPW develop the ability to see who is open and make the right decision not the easy one.

Re: Wilson shines in Alabama scrimmage

We will have more than one receiver capable of pulling down the passes. If JP panics, he can be picked up by another receiver. I just hope he is developing the vision.

He has happy feet and needs to settle down that is called poise under pressure something he has lacked in the past.

Re: Wilson shines in Alabama scrimmage

Yes, I have hated seeing him get that look. It scares me to death. He has to have confidence because if he doesn't, the opposing defense will know it and go after him.

Re: Wilson shines in Alabama scrimmage

If he doesn't have confidence, let him learn to bluff. If he can bluff, maybe he can actually gain the real thing! He's got the ability. Now just believe in yourself, JP!

I think I would be willing for them to try whatever ideas they can come up with. Let's submit THAT one!

I can get those now but you just can't see anything and you can't get in the way either. It isn't what it is cracked up to be.

Re: Wilson shines in Alabama scrimmage

Yeah, I guess it's not. You could get your head knocked off too. I've sure seen that happen, esp to the cameramen.
