| Meet the signees: B.J. Scott NAME: B.J. Scott POSITION: Wide receiver/cornerback HEIGHT/WEIGHT: 5-11, 194 HOMETOWN/SCHOOL: Prichard/Vigor HS SENIOR YEAR STATS: Amassed 2,394 all-purpose yards playing ESPN SCOUTS INC. GRADE/POSITION RANK: 84 (No. 19 on ESPN 150, No. 1 ATH) LIKELIHOOD TO START IN 2008 (SCALE OF 1 TO 10): 5 LIKELIHOOD TO PLAY IN 2008 (SCALE OF 1 TO 10): 10 THE SKINNY Scott — who played quarterback, running back, wide receiver, defensive back and returned kicks in high school — is the type of player who will have various position coaches fighting over him in the early stages of fall camp. Though he could probably win a starting job at cornerback as a true freshman, early indications are that he will get a look first at wide receiver. The loss of two receiver signees to pro baseball and possibly a third for academic reasons only strengthens the likelihood that Scott will begin his college career on offense. Either way, it will be fun to watch whether or not he's able to outshine fellow freshman sensation Julio Jones in fall camp. ESPN SCOUTS INC. EVALUATION This kid is a special athlete with all the movement skills you look for in a gamebreaker. Scott is great looking and a well-built athlete. He is one of the most explosive and speedy players in the athlete class. He will end up at running back, wide receiver or cornerback and regardless of his every down position, he has homerun threat written all over him as a return specialist. Of course he plays some QB in this scheme and is just good enough as a passer to keep defenses honest. His run skills are outstanding. His ability to exploit cutback lanes and tiny creases with burst and acceleration is impressive. He reaches top speed rapidly and can stop and start on dime and is a big play guy on the perimeter both as a runner and wide receiver. His body control, balance and agility to keep his feet are all excellent. He is a smooth athlete with quick hips and he has the frame to be a strong player at both wide receiver and cornerback. His burst and closing speed will tempt coaches to put him on defense. His natural run instincts and decisive style make him dangerous in the open field and a threat to go the distance each time he touches the ball as a result of his speed. What sets Scott apart from some other top athletes in this class is explosiveness and second gear. Overall, Scott has the upside to become a difference-maker and the tools to get on the field early, especially as a return specialist. Outstanding prospect. Story
